Inside deadly Greek caves 'The Abyss' - water-filled maze near where body found

A body believed to be that of beloved British TV presenter Michael Mosley was discovered on a Greek island this Sunday morning.

According to a police spokesperson, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, the body was spotted on a rocky coastline by a private boat near Agia Marina beach, close to a network of caves locally known as "The Abyss."

Michael Mosley, known for his engaging television and radio appearances as well as his popular column in the Daily Mail, went missing last Wednesday afternoon after setting out for a walk on the island of Symi.

Formal identification of the body is still pending.

A waiter at a nearby beach told The Telegraph: “It’s like a deep system of tunnels, but it is full of water and can spread for kilometres. "If there is a hole and you fall, you lose your sense of balance and drown there. There is a reason they call it 'The ‘Abyss. There is something very strange going on.”

The grim discovery was made when Lefteris Papakalodoukas, the mayor of the island, along with media representatives, noticed the body from their boat. "We zoomed with the cameras and saw it was him," the mayor recounted.

Details emerged that the body had seemingly tumbled down a steep slope, coming to rest against a fence in a face-up position, partially covered by rocks. A leather bag was still clutched in one hand, noted Antonis Mystiloglou, a cameraman from state TV ERT who was present at the scene.

Mosley, aged 67, gained international recognition with his 2013 book "The Fast Diet," co-authored with journalist Mimi Spencer. The book introduced the "5:2 diet," advocating for significant weight loss by restricting calorie intake two days a week while maintaining a healthy diet on the remaining days. His work has inspired many with its innovative approach to dieting and wellness.

Aside from his ventures, Mosley is a father of four children and his wife Clare Bailey Mosley who is equally accomplished, being a doctor, author and health columnist.
