Game of Thrones star Emilia Clark was worried show bosses might not think she was good enough when she came back to work after two brain injuries.

The 37-year-old said her insecurities “quadrupled” after she suffered haemorrhages in 2011 and 2013. She told the Big Issue about her difficulties in returning to play Daenerys Targaryen in the hit series.

Emilia said: “When you have a brain injury, it alters your sense of self on such a dramatic level, all of the insecurities you have going into the workplace quadruple overnight. The first fear we all had was, ‘Oh my God, am I going to get fired? Am I going to get fired because they think I’m not capable of completing the job?”’

After recovering from her injuries, Emilia and her mother, Jenny, set up the SameYou charity to help people with brain injuries. They were made MBEs earlier this year. SameYou is now working with the Big Issue to help brain injury survivors return to work.

A survey of 327 survivors found that of those who returned to work, 37% said they did not feel ready. More than a quarter felt pressure from their employer to return to work while 19% rated the support from their employer as “poor”.
