A woman has forked out £10k over 13 years on breast augmentations - only to be left with "wonky boobs".
Helen Young, 48, first had surgery to increase her breasts from a B-cup to a D-cup in 2005, after the birth of her second child left her boobs "deflated". The type of implants Helen wanted were more prone to rupturing and causing health issues - so the clinic offered to replace them for free in 2009.
A year after surgery, in 2010, problems began when Helen noticed a "severe" indentation in her left breast. The mum-of-two contacted the clinic and felt "fobbed-off" after they "refused" to take her calls and emails for 13 years, she claims. Helen eventually tracked down the CEO on LinkedIn who arranged for her to speak with the team.
She ended up paying another £4,800 for the same clinic to fix her boob, only for it to "get worse" - after it began looking "larger" and "wonkier" than before. Helen is now desperate for the clinic to fix the breast - which has left her £10k out of pocket and "shattered" her confidence.
The recruitment consultant, Kettering, Northamptonshire, said: "I don't feel feminine - my confidence and my spark has gone. I don't get undressed in front of my husband, Andrew, 29, anymore. He sees me cry most nights and can see the toll it's taken on me mentally and physically.
Hospitals run out of oxygen and mortuaries full amid NHS chaos"I should be proud to be able to go out and dress up but instead I live in baggy clothes. I begged and stashed to afford the private surgery and I can't afford more I need them to fix it." Helen saved up to afford her first set of implants at a private clinic in 2005 setting her back £5,500.
The surgery was a success until 2009, when studies revealed the type implants Helen had - PIP implants - had a higher chance of rupturing and causing unpleasant symptoms like pain, tenderness and swelling. She was offered replacement implants for free, which is when she claims the issues began.
Helen said: "I had my second surgery and then a year later, one day I just woke up and noticed it. Out of the blue there was an indentation in my left breast and it looked wonky." Helen reached out to the clinic for help, and claims she spent the next 13 years "chasing" them for a response.
"I had a certificate of care with them, so I felt stuck and continued contacting the clinic. But they weren't listening to my calls or my emails. I phoned and emailed and no replies from them or responses for nearly 13 years. That's why I messaged the CEO on LinkedIn - I was desperate."
Helen was eventually put in touch with a patient manager, and spoke with a surgeon at the clinic. She says she had to fork out another £4,900 on surgery to fix the "wonky" breast in July 2022 - which included a breast augmentation and an uplift. However, Helen claims that three weeks after that third surgery, her breast were "worse" than before.
Helen said: "My breast ended up larger and noticeably wonkier than before. I don't believe I had the uplift - it doesn't look like I did. If I had known last year that when I had the surgery to fix me, I'd end up a lot worse than I would have to begin with, I wouldn't have done it."
Due to the unusual size of her breast when seen in person, doctors at the clinic recommended a mammogram and ultrasound on the NHS in case in was due to cancer, but it came back all-clear. Helen is unable to afford another private clinic, and as she has gone private, she cannot get it fixed on the NHS.
She is now desperate for the clinic to fix her for free but says she's facing lots of hurdles to get more surgery. Helen said: "They had offered to fix the breast, but lots of surgeons have refused to operate due to risks around scarring and blood supply. Now it's looking like my case with them is closed and no one will help me.
"I don't feel like they are upholding a certificate of care they promised. I feel so stuck." All of this has left Helen unable to feel like she can have a social life with her confidence shattered she refuses to undress in front of husband Andrew Young, a concrete plant supervisor.
Helen advises others in her position to think carefully about getting cosmetic surgery and do the research beforehand. She said: "I've had friends that have done it and they look absolutely fantastic. I can hide scars, but I can't hide the breast difference. I feel less than a women and I just want my life back."
