Lando Norris' 'lie' about being Formula One's best British driver is looking more and more like the truth thanks to Lewis Hamilton's repeated struggles.

The McLaren sensation qualified in third place for the Canadian Grand Prix and went on to lead the race twice despite the challenging wet conditions. His hopes of sealing a second career victory were dashed by the safety car with just 11 laps remaining as Max Verstappen overtook him to claim a win in Montreal.

Still, Norris delivered another strong performance behind the wheel, with Mercedes pair George Russell and Lewis Hamilton trailing behind in third and fourth place. And the result placed Norris comfortably above his British counterparts in the Drivers’ Championship, solidifying him as the standout English driver of the year so far.

Norris faced an awkward question during a lie detector segment for Sky Sports F1 ahead of the Miami Grand Prix in May, where he was asked if he was the best British driver currently on the grid. After some brief deliberation, he responded: "Yes," but that was swiftly debunked by the lie detector.

When asked who he actually thought was the best, Norris reluctantly responded: "Lewis," giving the seven-time world champion his credit. But Norris' fortunes took a dramatic turn in that very race as he secured his first F1 victory in Miami - while Hamilton's shortcomings have only served to contradict his fellow Brit's plaudits.

Norris has outperformed Hamilton in all four races since the comment was made. Norris went on to secure an impressive second-place finish at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and came fourth in Monaco.

Despite admitting it was one of the "worst races" he had ever driven, Canada has been Ferrari-bound Hamilton's best result. The 39-year-old veteran started in seventh and managed to climb into the top five despite the wet track offering little room for error.

He found himself in third place after overtaking Oscar Piastri but was later passed by team-mate Russell, denying him his first podium finish of the season.

Reflecting on his performance, Hamilton told Sky Sports F1: "Over the weekend, it was just a really poor performance from myself. [During qualifying] some other things came into it, but mostly [from] myself. [On Sunday], it was one of the worst races that I've driven. Just lots of mistakes but of course if I qualified better, I would have been in a much better position. It is what it is. I'll go back to the drawing board."

Since Norris' lie detector test before the Miami race, Hamilton's record against Russell stands at 2-2. However, Russell has managed to edge ahead by one point in that time frame.
