A model has been left devastated after she went blind and had to have her eyeball removed after a botched eyelash appointment.
Bai Fern, 40, who also works as a bar hostess, was looking forward to getting her eyelash extensions at a clinic in Thailand. She visited the Ban Irene clinic in the Chonburi province after her friend recommended it on March 8. However, during the appointment, she complained of a stinging sensation in her eyes.
One week later, she was struck with a severe infection after some of the eyelash adhesives reportedly dropped into her left eye. She told local media: "The staff just told me to sit in front of the electric fan to ease the stinging, but it still continued even after I returned home. My symptoms became worse around March 17 or 18, so I took some anti-inflammatory medication."
On March 20, she went to the doctor after the coloured part of the eye that surrounds the pupil ( iris), changed colour. She complained of persistent eye pain and severe swelling as her iris turned to a turbid milky tone. Bai added: "I was shocked when the doctor told me to call my family and inform them of my infection. I thought it was just a minor issue. I did not think it would be that severe."
The following morning, Bai went to the Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital but was told her healthcare insurance would not cover the fees. She was transferred to Chonburi Hospital for treatment instead. Speaking about the ordeal, she continued: "The doctor asked if I was ready or not. At that time, I was shocked. What did he mean? But eventually, I understood that he meant the removal of my eye.

During her recovery, Bai filed a complaint against the beauty clinic with the Banglamung Police Station in Chonburi on June 6. Her lawyers, Somyot Nanaprasert and Peerachai Chawaratchotiwong said the clinic was liable for "intentional or negligent actions that cause damage to another person's property".
Somyot said: "Our client is a model who uses her beauty to work and earn income. Her career has been negatively impacted due to the surgery's effect on her appearance. In terms of damages, she has had to pay for treatment, medication, and various travel expenses, which we are collecting to present in court. However, we will give the other party a chance to mediate and talk, and we are waiting for the police to call them in for questioning." The beauty clinic owner, Onanong Kaewkanha, 31, said she was in Bangkok at the time of the incident.
In May, a Thai woman had to undergo corrective surgery for a bungled eye bag reduction surgery. The 27-year-old, identified only as 'Miss A', underwent the blepharoplasty operation to reduce her puffy eyebags, only to be left with severe swelling instead.
The operation caused a horrible infection under her eyes that left her "feeling disabled" and unable to walk on her own. Miss A reported the doctor at the Pak Kret Police Station in Nonthaburi province. She is now receiving treatment from a team of kind surgeons at Bangkok's Yanhee Hospital, who offered to treat her for free.
