Greek authorities who carried out the search for Dr Michael Mosley have revealed "preliminary" information from their investigation into the star's disappearance and death - challenging one of the main theories about how the well-loved TV presenter came to a tragic end while on holiday with his wife.

Questions around how Dr Mosley came to die on a Greek hillside less than a hundred metres from a popular tourist spot arose immediately after his body was sadly discovered on Sunday, with CCTV footage from the nearby restaurant on Agia Marina beach showing the 67-year-old father of four "making his way down a rocky slope close to a fence before he falls out of view".

Five days later, his body was discovered after a cameraman re-examined his footage and spotted the health expert just metres from safety, obscured by a fence. Claims emerged in the Greek press on Monday night that police had been handed CCTV footage of the well-liked health expert in the moments before his death a stunning four days before his body was ultimately found.

The owner of the Agia Marina restaurant that the TV doctor was found close to told reporters that he had handed his CCTV to the police on either Wednesday night, or Thursday. According to Live News, police officers admitted that they had seen the video, but had not been able to make out more than a small "dot", which turned out to be Dr Mosley.

In their response, the Greek police in charge of the investigation confirmed that its "preliminary" stages did not support the theory that Dr Michael Mosley fell, while clambering down the rocky hillside on the island of Symi.

Responding to the claims that they had the footage in their possession for days, the Hellenic Police said: "The reality is that the video footage came into the possession of the Greek Police after the body was found."

But, speaking from their headquarters, they added: "It is emphasised that from the preliminary investigation material so far, it does not appear that the British presenter fell from a height"

The coroner in Greece is yet to publish their findings, which have been hampered by the amount of time that lapsed between Dr Mosley's death and the discovery of his body.

However, speaking to the Greek press before his findings are published, Coroner Grigoris Leo said: "The most likely cause of death is from natural causes."

A police source told the Mirror that interim findings suggest it is impossible to determine an exact cause of the 67-year-old's death at this stage.

They said: “The way the body was positioned suggests that first he sat down and then he died. There is no indication that he was hit by something in the head for example, or that he collapsed while walking."
