After giving birth, the midwife will usually ask you what form of birth control you've considered.
Many women will simply respond that sex is the last thing on their minds and tell hospital staff that they don't want any contraceptives. But one midwife has issued a warning to new mums as she wants them to be prepared for how fertile they're going to be after having a baby.
Elizabeth Idowu, who posts online under the username @mamadinya, is known for sharing her knowledge about pregnancy and birth on social media as she works as a midwife in London. She teaches classes to empower mothers with the knowledge to make informed decisions during labour.
But one thing she claims many women aren't clued up on is just how fast they can fall pregnant post-partum. She warns mums that "unless you want your kids back to back please be careful".
In the video, which has gained more than 710,000 likes, she explained: "When you have periods. Yeah. Before you have your period your body is getting ready, like, okay, let's see if she's going to get pregnant. Let's see if she's going to get pregnant.
Pregnant Stacey Solomon brands herself an 'old fogy' over NYE plans with Joe"When you don't get pregnant, your body says like, oh damn, that's it. Away. Cool. We're not getting pregnant this month. When you do get pregnant for nine months, this part of your body, this mechanism has been on annual leave for nine months.
"So what happens after you have your baby? You're shattered, you're tired. You're thinking, no I couldn't have another baby. But your body has been prepped. When I say prepped, I mean it sends the egg with the most vim, with the most energy.
"This egg is practically a harlot. She is. If eggs were clothed, she's naked. She's, like, fertilized me. Fertilize me. After you have your baby, you are extremely fertile."
The expert went on to advise new mum's to listen when the midwife is offering them contraceptives as they may not think they want to have sex yet but they are likely to be intimate within a few weeks.
She quipped: "I'm just trying to say you are extremely fertile after you have your baby, especially if you're having periods after your baby. You're fertile, bro, that egg is a h**. Be careful. It's dangerous in the streets."
TikTok users were left cackling with laughter as many mums took to the comments to share their quick conception stories. One user said: "My midwife warned me I said NEVER! 5months I’m pregnant again. The WALK OF SHAME I HAD TO DO TO MY APPOINTMENT!! The midwife laughed so hard."
Another added: "The midwives said “see you next year” to my wife and I," while a third wrote: "Realizing I was the harlot egg." Meanwhile, a fourth added: "Facts!!! My sisters first 3 kids are all 10 months apart!!!"
