LUXURY department store Harrods is flogging cherries — for £1.69 each.

The famous London shop has the dangly fruit priced at £165 a kilo — with a punnet weighing 508g and containing around 50 costing £83.82.

Staff say the grower in San Francisco is rated the world’s best — but aghast punters say the fruits are “way too expensive”.

Just one cherry costs about the same as a small pot from Lidl — and a kilo at Tesco works out at £12.50.

Harrods floor shop assistant Jen Ramirez, 28, said the exorbitant cost was down to the cherries’ “unique sweetness”.

She said: “Some people are very surprised when they see the price, but we have customers that don’t care because they’re looking for quality. A lot of people buy them.”

One US couple who are staying in London said: “They’re beautiful but we can get half a kilo back home for about £8.”

The monster price tag was spotted by shopper Christina Gaidu who wrote: “Shopping in Harrods Food Hall and I almost bought them but then I saw the price.”

One follower on Instagram wrote: “It’s cheaper to fly to Spain and buy 5kg with €10.”

Another added: “Totally ridiculous.”

The cherries, however, are not the most expensive fruit at Harrods where a Japanese crown melon displayed on red silk was priced at £150.
