Who was Lucrecia Pérez?

Lucrecia Pérez was an immigrant who was brutally murdered in Spain.

Aged 33, she left her Dominican village, Vicente Noble, in the hope of starting a better life in Spain for her family.

Upon arriving in Madrid, Lucrecia found a job as a maid, in a family home with three children.

However, the job didn't last long and after 20 days she found herself homeless and jobless.

It was this despair that led her to taking refuge in an abandoned nightclub, called Four Roses, in Aravaca, a wealthy suburb of Madrid.

The building was being lived in by other immigrants, who too had found themselves on the streets.

What happened to Lucrecia Pérez?

Whilst seeking refuge in the abandoned nightclub, Lucrecia Pérez was murdered.

On November 13, 1992, she was shot dead by a gang of Neo-Nazi's who stormed building, led by a rouge Spanish civil guard.

Three of the evil gang were only teenagers.

The rouge officer started shooting randomly, injuring two of the immigrants.

But Lucrecia was the only one that was killed.

Just minutes before her murder, she was reportedly eating dinner by candlelight.

Lucrecia's murder was later classified as Spain's first officially recognised hate crime.

The abandoned nightclub where she was killed has since been demolished and a monument of Lucrecia has been put up in her memory.

The trial of the killers, who belonged to extreme-right groups, saw them convicted for her murder and jailed for life.

Lucrecia's family were awarded 120,000 euros in compensation.
