James Bulger’s mum says the family of a man brutally stabbed to death by two 12-year-olds have joined her as members of “the most awful club”.

Denise Fergus offered her support after the boys, who cannot be named, were convicted of Shawn Seesahai’s machete murder. The pair became the youngest murderers in the UK since James was killed by Jon Venables and Robert Thompson in 1993.

Denise, 56, said: “I can’t say how sorry I am enough to the Seesahai family. The saddest thing is that I know what they are going through. I know the hole that a death like this leaves in their family, in their lives. Nothing will ever heal that. I want to tell them that I am here if they ever wanted to talk. I want to help support them if I can.

“You don’t understand it until you become a unique member of the most awful club. Losing a child at any point is terrible but the Seesahai family now have to comprehend their son being murdered by children like James was. It makes a nightmare harder to cope with.”

Denise said Shawn’s killers must serve “a full adult life sentence”, should be moved to an adult prison at 18 and be placed on a rehabilitation programme immediately. Venables and Thompson – both 11 when convicted of murdering her two-year-old son – served less than eight years in a young offenders institution. Venables has repeatedly reoffended and is back in prison for downloading indecent images of children.

Denise said: “Seeing what happened this week sent shivers down my spine. Seeing that two kids as young as 12 years old can be capable of such evil triggered some of the feelings I felt in 1993. Lessons must be learned after how my son James’s killers were dealt with. Rehabilitation programmes should start now. I appreciate that they will have to spend time in a young offenders institution until they are 16 but from then they have to go into a real prison. These crimes must be treated with an adult sentence.

“We have seen what happened with James’s killers. They never went to an adult prison, served less than eight years for the murder and were released at 18. Jon Venables has spent his life in and out of prison having repeatedly reoffended. These killers must serve an adult sentence. The justice system must show the public again that lessons have been learned.”

The boys attacked complete stranger Shawn, 19, in a Wolverhampton park. A trial at Nottingham crown court heard Shawn, of Handsworth, Birming-ham, was “chopped” with the 16in blade and stabbed in the heart. A friend who was with him fled but said Shawn stumbled as he tried to get away on November 13.

Both boys blamed the other for inflicting the fatal blow. They will be sentenced next month, when a judge could lift anonymity orders. Denise said: “I don’t think the anonymity should be lifted. That is not to protect the killers, but the anonymity will protect their families lives from being ruined.”

Shawn’s parents Suresh and Manashwary, who also have a teenage daughter, said on TV they feels sorry for the killers’ parents. James was abducted at a shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside. Denise added: “Our fight going forward will be in James’s name and now in the name of Shawn too.
