James Gregory, who was dubbed the Funniest Man in America, has died at the age of 78. The comedian has died in Tennessee after suffering cardiac complications.
Confirming his death on social media, James' family took to his official Facebook page on May 9 to share the sad news. "Today, with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of the Funniest Man in America, comedian James Gregory," the statement began.
They went on to add: "He brought laughter and joy to countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on the world of comedy and those who loved him.

"James' three nieces who referred to him as 'Uncle Bubba,' Martha Anne, Mary Jane, and Candie, along with their families, were instrumental in caring for him through his last days and weeks."

It also stated that just before his passing, "he completed work on his first and only autobiography, A Bushel of Beans and a Peck of Tomatoes: The Life and Times of “The Funniest Man in America,” James Gregory (Post Hill Press), which will be published in November 2024".
The family has asked for privacy at this time, noting that funeral plans are to be determined.
Thousands of fans have flocked to the comment section of the post, with many sending condolences and messages of support to James' family. One person penned: "So sorry to hear this. Loved watching him!"
Another person went on to write: "This breaks my heart. He really was the funniest. I'm so sad to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family and friends. God be with them all. May he rest in eternal peace."
A third person then said: "Oh man….thats a tough one..loved this guy and his humor! Wish I could have seen him live….". While a fourth added: "One of the most genuine funny men of my lifetime, what a legend."
James was born in his parents’ kitchen in Georgia on May 6, 1946, meaning he only recently celebrated his birthday. His comedy career began in 1981, at the age of 36, when James answered an ad to participate in a comedy night in the basement of an Atlanta restaurant.
His obituary reads that as a successful salesman "with a knack for entertaining audiences", it was believed he might have the makings of a comedian. "Within a year, he was the first performer to take the stage at the new Punchline comedy club in Atlanta.
"As the comedy boom of the 1980s expanded, James quickly worked his way to headliner status."
