Actor Tony Lo Bianco has died aged 87, according to US media.

The iconic film and TV star's passing was first announced by New York-based radio station TalkRadio 77 WABC. Posting the news on Wednesday morning, they wrote: "Breaking News - Actor Tony Lo Bianco has Passed more to Follow."

Born to first-generation Italian American parents in New York City, Tony's career kicked off in theatre, gracing several Broadway stages throughout the swinging sixties. His big-screen debut came with The Sex Perils of Paulette (1965).

Later, he stepped into the shoes of a killer in the semi-autobiographical crime film, The Honeymoon Killers in 1970. He then landed a role as Salvatore Boca in William Friedkin's critically acclaimed action flick, The French Connection in 1971.

The star took on the role of a detective investigating a series of chilling murders in Larry Cohen's horror film, God Told Me To in 1976. He also featured in six episodes of Joseph Wambaugh's anthology TV series Police Story, four times alongside Don Meredith.

As his career blossomed, Tony made appearances in a number of well-known films throughout the 90s and the 2000s. However, fans may also remember him for his regular stint on hit-US television programme Law and Order. Tony first graced the popular crime drama in 1992, reprising his role as Joesph in 2007.

In addition to his acting career, Lo Bianco has also served as the national spokesperson for the Order Sons of Italy in America. His humanitarian efforts have earned him a plethora of awards. Among his accolades is the Man of the Year for Outstanding Contributions to the Italian-American Community from the Police Society of New Jersey.

He's also been honoured with a Man of the Year Award from the State of New Jersey Senate; a Lifetime Entertainment Award from the Columbus Day Parade Committee; the 1997 Golden Lion Award; and the Humanitarian Award of the Boys' Town of Italy.

Lo Bianco was married to Dora Landey from 1964 to 1984, with whom he shares three daughters. He later married Elizabeth Fitzpatrick from 2002 to 2008. In June 2015, he exchanged vows with his current wife, Alyse Best Muldoon.
