Liverpool have banked millions thanks to former flop Luis Alberto eight years after he quit Anfield.
The Spaniard - who was on Merseyside between 2013 and 2016 - has completed a £8.4million transfer to Qatari side Al-Duhail. The move brings to an end Alberto’s successful stint with Italian giants Lazio.
The now 31-year-old moved to Rome in 2016 after struggling with Liverpool. And the Reds were due around 30 percent of any future transfer fee that Lazio received for any sale.
It means that the Reds have secured around £2.4m on top of the £3.3m that they banked when originally selling him to Lazio. Liverpool will certainly be thankful that Al-Duhail agreed a deal with the Italians, after the midfielder demanded his contract be ripped up.
Speaking in April, he said: “The last few weeks have been difficult for me. I don’t know what the project is going to be, but I can say that I will certainly not be part of the project for next season.

“I already asked the club to terminate my contract, I do not want to take another Euro from Lazio. I think it is only right now to step aside. This club has given me so much, but the time has come to step aside and leave it to others.”
Alberto’s spell with Lazio was certainly more successful than his Liverpool career. He scored 52 goals in 307 appearances for the Italians, helping them to the 2019 Coppa Italia.

Alberto made just 12 goalless appearances for the Reds. He believes that he shared a large slice of the blame for how his Anfield career panned out.
“I think it’s a little bit my fault,” he said to France Football in 2020. “I didn’t do everything necessary to be at my level in terms of work and focus.
“What I should have done at 20, I was only able to do it at 25. It’s a shame, I lost a few years. I’m 27 now. I’m trying to make the most of it and I think there’s a lot of time left to continue to enjoy myself.”
Alberto added: “I left Spain quickly, and especially a context, at Barcelona ’s B team. At Liverpool, I adapted well, but it happened bit by bit. I finished by reaching a good level, with the possibility of playing a little bit. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chance to win the Premier League."
