Brits fed up with the rain which replaced the weekend sunshine will be overjoyed to find out the UK will soon be warmer than sunny Malibu.

Over the weekend the nation enjoyed , as a balmy 26.5C was recorded in London and parts of the south. Today it was replaced by the risk of thunderstorms and rain in many places, with yellow warnings remaining for some places into tomorrow.

Many may be already dreaming of taking a break in the sunshine to get a tan - but in a matter of days the conditions at home will mean no one will need to get on a plane. Forecasts show a warm spell is arriving next month - with the mercury rocketing to a balmy 23C in places of the UK on both Sunday May 19 and Tuesday May 21. In comparison, on the same day in Malibu in California, it will be a lowly 16C.

Although it may be warm, the Met Office warns there also may be rain. Their forecast reads: “Changeable with showers developing by day across the UK through the end of the week and over the weekend. The heaviest showers and greatest risk of thunderstorms across southern parts. Temperatures generally around or just a little above average, though with winds tending to be light, still feeling warm in sunnier areas.

“Over the weekend there are signs that showers may start to ease across the north with drier, more settled conditions probably becoming established for a time here. Confidence lowers into the following week with signals mixed. On balance a continuation of the showers in the south seems most likely, with the north continuing to see the best of any drier weather. Temperatures probably remaining a little above average.”

However, James Madden from Exacta Weather is tipping the UK to enjoy a warm end to the month, and said in his latest update that it would "turn settled and much warmer to hot from in and around next weekend and into the final third of May".
