Former X Factor winner Matt Terry has issued a savage dig about his experience on the ITV show.

The singer won the now defunct ITV singing competition back in 2016 after tipping Saara Aalto to the top spot. He shot to fame after auditioning with a cover of Ben E. King's Stand By Me and managed to get four yeses from the judges. Matt landed a record deal with Sony label RCA after his win, as he was tipped to turn into the next Olly Murs.

However, he was dropped just two years later and last year revealed he performs on cruise ships. The star came out as a gay man earlier this year as he admitted he is "no longer afraid". Speculation over his sexuality and societal pressures forced him to keep his romance with a man secret when he first rose to fame almost a decade ago.

The 30-year-old is back making music again and has confessed it was "difficult" to hide his true self while on The X Factor. "It was really difficult. I think it was a time where I hadn't explored that area of my life yet," he told The Sun. "So how was I supposed to define myself if I hadn't, you know, gone there. Which was a really tough thing to do, especially when there was a lot of people asking me am I or aren’t I?"

He shared how he is now focusing on his music and to be able to release "music that I think think is good and without someone in my ear telling me what they think is good". Speaking to Gay Times in March, Matt confessed the struggle he felt hiding his sexuality and declared: "I'm very proud [of my sexuality], and I'm no longer afraid."

The singer opened up on his single 'His Car', where he apologises for not being open about his sexuality. "That's my story. That's my truth. And it's one of the most important stories I'm going to tell," he told the publication. "I've been hiding who I was, and I haven't really opened up. I've never let anybody in. This song is an apology to the first man I fell in love with because I asked a lot of him." He shared how he asked his partner to not tell anyone about them, but realised years later "it's not something you should ask somebody."

Matt has previously hit out at the ITV show as he revealed the pressure he felt to fit in. "There was no duty of care from anyone." He told The Sun last year: "I did win, which was incredible and it changed my life, and I truly live by everything happening because it's supposed to. But I feel like it was a dark time afterwards. I don't think I was supported, no one checked on me, no one saw if I was OK."
