Taylor Swift fans produced a seismic response to the singer at her latest gig by triggering earthquake monitors.

Dancing in the record-breaking crowd of 72,990 and the rapturous reception they gave the star sparked ground movement that was picked up 3.7 miles away.

The British Geological Survey said fans on the first night of the UK leg of Swift’s world Eras Tour at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh generated the most activity. The earth moved most as the 34-year-old belted out her hits Shake It Off, Cruel Summer and Ready For It?

A four-minute applause after she sang Champagne Problems produced 23.4 nanometres of movement on the BGS monitors at its HQ in the Lyell Centre, Edinburgh. Dancing in time to the music reached a peak at 160 beats per minute during Ready For It? That transmitted around 80kW of energy – equivalent to around 6,000 car batteries.

BGS seismologist Callum Harrison said: "It’s amazing that we’ve been able to measure the reaction of thousands of concert-goers remotely through our data.

"The opportunity to explore seismic activity created by a different kind of phenomenon has been a thrill. Clearly Scotland’s reputation for providing some of the most enthusiastic audiences remains well intact." Earthquake monitors have recorded activity during other dates on the Eras tour, including LA and Seattle in the US.

The BGS said the vibrations generated by the Edinburgh concerts from last Friday to Sunday are unlikely to have been felt by anyone other than those in the immediate vicinity.

Edinburgh City Council approved an increase to the Murrayfield concert capacity from 67,144 for each gig. Swift thanked fans for breaking “the all-time attendance record for a stadium show in Scotland three times in a row”.

The American played the first of three gigs at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool on Thursday, June 13 and will move on to Cardiff and London. Taylor performed her first show in Liverpool in wet and cold weather conditions. Swifties hope that she will announce Reputation (Taylor's Version) while on UK soil. Her tour also takes in Dublin before heading to the continent and back to London to end the UK and European leg in August.

Looks like a lot of fans could be left quaking with joy…
