A teenage footballer has been killed after a row broke out during a softball match that he was watching from the stands.

Giancarlos Giameli Garcia del Cid, 18, was fatally shot in the head after a man pulled out a gun during a brawl at a local game in Maria Chiquita Panama earlier this week.

Local media said that five other men, aged between 22 and 39, were wounded by the gunfire and rushed to a nearby hospital. But the family of Garcia have claimed there were not enough ambulances to take him.

Police said that they found several people injured and others in shock upon arriving at the scene but they arrested two men.

They have been subsequently charged with homicide with aggravating factors and attempted homicide. One alleged offender, aged 21, has been remanded into custody.

Garcia played as a centre back for top-flight team Arabe Unido in Colon. He was also part of the Panama Under-17 team that played at last year’s World Cup in Indonesia.

In a statement the club wrote: “At 18 years old, he stood out not only for his skills on the field but also for his values and respect towards his teammates and coaches. We bid farewell to his physical presence, but his spirit and bravery will always remain with us.”
