When you think of the world’s most beautiful beaches it might be white powdery sands and swaying palm trees that spring to mind.
However one of the world’s most beautiful beaches is miles from any sea coast in a completely landlocked country, according to a list compiled by website Beachatlas. The group compiled a list of the top 100 beaches in the world, using measurements like natural beauty, cultural significance and community.
Using a combination of computer algorithms coupled with the insight of travel experts and influencers they tried to compile a list that highlighted beaches that went beyond just the beautiful to the interesting and adventurous too. Alongside classics like Brazil’s Copacabana beach and the stunning Thai Maya Bay, star of Hollywood movie The Beach, the list of the Golden Beach Awards 2024 also features places like Omaha Beach in Normandy, site of the D-Day landings and Namibia’s desolate Skeleton Coast.
The beach which came number 14 on the list of the planet's top 100 beaches does feature some classic ingredients like beautiful turquoise waters, but it just happens to be way up in the mountains, hundreds of miles from any coastline. Lake Lucerne in the heart of landlocked Switzerland is described by Brachatlas as “a stunning natural wonder.”
The lake with its deep turquoise waters and amazing backdrop of soaring mountains is a breath-taking, if unusual, addition to the list. Lake Lucerne has a total area of 114 km2 (44 sq mi) and is up at a height of 434 m (1,424 ft) many parts of the shore rise steeply into the mountains, which soar up to 1,500 m above the lake offering stunning vistas.

As well as the obvious opportunities for mountaineering, the lake is popular with those who enjoy watersports. There is both a rowing and a yacht club on the lake and it has hosted motorboat and water ski competitions. The wind whistling down the alpine valleys also makes certain spots ideal for windsurfing.
