Clement Turpin is set to officiate at Euro 2024's opening clash between Scotland and Germany - despite infuriating Rio Ferdinand and Thomas Tuchel just over a year ago.
The French referee will be in the spotlight for the tournament's opener on Friday (June 14), when the Tartan Army will take on the three-time European champions on their home turf.
Turpin, considered one of Europe's top referees, faced backlash for his handling of the Champions League quarter-final between Bayern Munich and Manchester City in April 2023, reports the Daily Record.
The 42 year old was lambasted by Rio Ferdinand and then-Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel after a chaotic first half, which included him arriving late for kick-off. He initially sent off Bayern's Dayot Upamecano, only to reverse the decision when Erling Haaland was found offside.
The drama didn't stop there, as Turpin issued five yellow cards, gave Manchester City a penalty, and booked Tuchel, who was later sent off for continuous dissent. On BT Sport, Ferdinand expressed his disapproval, saying: "I've not liked the ref today, not my cup of tea. He wants it to be more about him than the game."
Ferdinand in full agreement with Carragher over latest Maguire setbackTuchel didn't mince his words, lambasting the ref as he saw his team crushed 4-1, stating: "Two things couldn't keep up with the level: the pitch wasn't in a good condition and also the referee unfortunately was grade E."
Turpin is set to come face-to-face with some of Bayern's players including Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, and Thomas Muller in their first Euros showdown. Scotland hope to pull off an early upset in their second consecutive European Championship tournament.
Steve Clarke's squad have a challenging task ahead to qualify from Group A. Hungary and Switzerland follow on for them after Friday match against Germany.
The top two teams automatically move forward to the knockout stages, with the four best third-placed teams joining them.
