The Princess of Wales is "expected to" appear at King Charles III's Trooping the Colour celebrations this weekend, her official itinerary from Kensington Palace has confirmed.
Speculation has mounted as to whether the Princess - who is undergoing preventative treatment for an undisclosed cancer - would appear at the King's official birthday this weekend. A recent itinerary suggests she plans to attend the royal event alongside her children, and even appear on the royal balcony.
The Princess, who was confirmed to be missing the official dress rehearsals on June 8, will travel with her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, in a state carriage down the Mall during the ceremony on June 15. Prince William, on the other hand, will take part in the procession on horseback, as he has done in previous Trooping the Colour appearances.
The itinerary states that she will watch the parade from the Buckingham Palace Major General’s Office with the rest of the family. Kensington Palace also expects the Princess will appear on the balcony for the all-important Red Arrows flypast, which typically sees the royals - both major and minor - clubbing together and waving to the general public as they watch the proceedings.
But the Princess' presence, while expected, is not guaranteed as of yet. The Palace said her "recovery and wellbeing" would be prioritised, and that, with this in mind, any plans "may be amended at short notice".
Meghan Markle 'to unleash her own memoirs' as Prince Harry's drops next weekThe same has been said of her other potential appearances, with Kensington Palace keeping her health at the forefront of any plans, with "contingencies" in place should the Princess be unable to make any of her expected appearances over the weekend. In its official note, the Palace said she had consulted with King Charles - who is also undergoing treatment for cancer - before the ceremony.
A spokesperson said: "We do not comment on private conversations between members of the Royal Family. However, we can confirm, Her Royal Highness spoke to His Majesty about her attendance."
While the Palace expects that she will participate in parts of the ceremony, she will miss out on a key role she holds as the Princess of Wales. Her title makes her the Colonel of the Irish Guards, and, during Trooping the Colour, she would usually be expected to salute the regiment.
But this year she is sending a senior military official, Lieutenant General James Bucknall, is taking the salute on her behalf. The Princess has already shown her support for the regiment in an official note in which she wished them good luck ahead of the Colonel’s Review last weekend.
