A creepy-looking “monster” fish lurking in water has gone viral after footage was shared online.

After a late night angling trip, Jo O’Rarussy encountered two “fish” ogling at him from underneath the murky ocean in a boat in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The creatures appear to be very large with unusual-looking faces. Jo described the fish as having glowing eyes and what looked almost like a smile staying fixed on him the entire time. Even after Jo threw back a fish he had caught into the water, he said the “monster” fish remained completely unphased and continued to stare back menacingly.

The video recorded has been viewed more than 76 million times leaving people confused and guessing wildly what the creature could be. Some viewers speculated that they were arapaima fish. According to the arapaima fish "must surface every 10-20 minutes to breathe air, making a loud, distinctive gulp, which makes them easy targets for fishermen".

Arapaima are native to South America and very large - on average they measure 10 feet long and weigh in at 440 pounds. Arapaimas have gills and can remove oxygen from the water but they can also extract oxygen from air. These creatures are known to be located near the surface to gulp air.

According to of the many stories of arapaima fish, the biggest confirmed fish, is one of 2.6m. Fish as heavy as 220 kg have been reported but, currently, it is thought that the largest fish are around 100 kg. One user wrote: "Guys those are arapaima or pirarucu. they can breathe air and their body is almost entirely plated in bone. they also like to jump so they are quite dangerous."

Another commented: "WHY ARE THEY SMILING" and a third person added: "Anyone else terrified right now.” Meanwhile, another said: "That Cheshire Cat Smile is HORRIFYING.” Someone else added: "ARAPAIMA FISHES ARE SO CUTE WHY YALL SCARED." Earlier this week, reported on a “suicidal” arapaima who leapt out of a tiny tank after being fed up with being in a confined space.

According to the owner of the aquarium over six years the fish managed to grow to 5.2ft and was worth more than RMB 50,000 (£5,400). Arapaima fish, can become irritable in artificial environments and may leap out of the water if they feel constrained or harassed. The fish had already smashed against the lid of the tiny aquarium before the fatal accident.
