Fans have torn into Jamie Carragher for his “embarrassing” comments about Cristian Romero in Tottenham’s defeat to Manchester City.

The former Liverpool defender made an outspoken joke at the Argentine’s expense on Tuesday evening. Romero had lost out to Phil Foden in a 50-50 challenge before Man City’s opening goal in North London.

And Carragher hinted that he might have been holding back on his normally aggressive style of play to ensure that North London rivals Arsenal would lose out in the title race. He then joked that Romero’s neighbour could potentially be a Gunner.

Those comments did not go down well with supporters who took to social media with their complaints. Taking to Twitter, one fan said: “Are Carragher and Neville really suggesting that Romero let himself get beaten? @SkySportsPL need to reel them in.”

Meanwhile, another wrote: “Did Jamie Carragher just question if Romero’s neighbour is an Arsenal fan, implying he’s doing them a favour? Is that questioning the integrity of a professional football player?”

The complaints continued to come following the incident. One fan said: “@SkySports and what did Carragher just say about Romero and Arsenal after his poor tackle…and then tried to talk around it…he’s disgusting!!”

“Carragher suggesting Romero is match fixing on LIVE TV is embarrassing,” another supporter complained, while a final fan said: “Not sure how Neville and Carragher can slate Romero for losing that 50-50 after they slaughtered him for over-aggression up to now. Either let him break legs or zip it.”

While Romero was unable to halt City’s opening goal, he was then at the heart of another contentious incident later in the game. In attempting to get on the end of a cross, the Argentine collided with City goalkeeper Ederson.

The Brazilian received lengthy treatment on the pitch following the heavy collision, while Romero was booked for his part. Ederson tried to continue but was eventually taken off the pitch in place of Stefan Ortega.

City eventually sealed a 2-0 success after Haaland doubled his evening’s work from the penalty spot. Jeremy Doku was fouled by Pedro Porro late on.

The win sees City in prime position to claim the Premier League title heading into the final matchday. Pep Guardiola’s side now hold a two-point advantage over rivals Arsenal.

City take on West Ham on the final day, while the Gunners clash with Everton. While the title race is set to head into the final weekend, Spurs’ fight for a Champions League spot is now officially over. Their defeat to City has officially handed the final spot to Aston Villa.
