Tom Cruise 's sagging skin may have been caused by "liposuction" one expert has claimed.

The Hollywood star was snapped enjoying some downtime without his top on on a beach in Spain earlier this week, causing many to comment on his physique. Tom, 61, appeared toned in the pictures but had areas where his skin apparently wasn't as taut as it could be.

The images drew comparisons between the Top Gun actor and his industry peers of a similar age including Brad Pitt and Benjamin Bratt who are both 60. Now an expert plastic surgeon has given his take on just what may be the cause of the sagging areas on Tom's body.

Talking to DailyMail.com Dr David Hill, a Chicago plastic surgeon admitted that prior cosmetic procedures could be the cause - namely liposuction which is a surgery that involves sucking out fat from parts of the body where it may gather and be stubborn to remove. This includes the stomach, hips, thighs and bum.

Dr Hill explained: "Usually, if you lose weight naturally over time, you get less of that skin rippling and irregularity, because it's gradual. With liposuction, because it's more immediate, the skin doesn't have time to contract as much... so Tom's Cruise's saggy skin could be a hallmark of [liposuction]."

However, Dr Hill also noted that if Tom has had lipo, it was done extremely well as he doesn't "see any hallmarks of irregular contour on his body that would suggest bad liposuction, but there is enhanced muscle definition, which is reflective of his earlier photos when he was younger. If they did it, they did it well."

Meanwhile, a second expert, Dr Howard Sobel, cosmetic dermatologic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, told the publication that it was not possible to say if Tom has had surgery and that the skin sagging noted in the images could just be natural ageing. He added that "in any 61-year-old guy you would expect to have some skin sagging, because as we get older, we lose that elasticity in our skin."

He pointed out that Tom's areas of loss of tone are typical in men stating that the "areas of your chest, and the areas below your chest, the skin around your ribs and your abs are very often the first to lose the elasticity, especially in a man."

Tom previously told Men's Health how he indulges in a variety of physical activities in order to maintain his fitness. He said: "Sea-kayaking, caving… fencing, treadmill, weights… rock climbing, hiking… I jog… I do so many different activities."

The star follows a five-day workout plan which sees him commit to three days of weight training and cardio per week, plus two additional more adventurous activity days where he will partake in activities including hiking or fencing. He performs a range of exercises including one-armed barbell presses, weighted lunges, and deadlifts.
