The real reason for David Beckham supporting his wife Victoria's fashion business is to protect their beloved Beckham brand, writes Tom Bower.

The investigative journalist's new book The House of Beckham: Money, Sex and Power, which is being serialised by the Mirror before its release on June 20, takes a deep dive into the relationship of one of the most influential couples in the world, including the importance of their Beckham business.

After the couple were rocked by claims David had embarked on an extra marital affair with his former PA, Rebecca Loos - which he denied- many thought the Beckhams were heading for divorce. However, their decision to stay together was, in part, the book claims, because both David and Victoria appreciated the importance of being a united front to their brand.

Ever since tying the knot on those gold thrones in 1999, the pair have created a long-lasting appeal, making them enviously attractive to advertisers, including US giant, Uber Eats. During the ad break for Super Bowl 2024, the couple plugged the online takeaway, sending their legion of loyal fans into a frenzy. David also owns football club, Inter Miami, while Victoria is finally making a profit with her Victoria Beckham fashion house.

Offering his take on the Beckhams, Bower claims the couple are doggedly dedicated to their brand, writing: “[David’s] status and survival would have been washed away without Victoria’s determination to maintain the illusion of a happy family. She steadfastly protected the brand. In return he continued to finance her vanity business. Her tiny fashion house is unlikely ever to be genuinely profitable, but her supporters fully approve her steely ambition regardless of the monotonous repetition in promotional interviews.”

Victoria launched her clothing line in 2008 and has reportedly been bailed out by husband David, who is said to have pumped in about £23million to keep her afloat. The Beckhams declined to comment when the Mirror asked for comment on the figure in 2019.

The Spice Girl-turned-designer, 50, had accumulated losses of £66.3m since the venture launched in 2008, and had allegedly been propped up by other branches of the Beckham brand’s empire in the past. However, last year, Victoria said her fashion house was in the black, telling French Vogue: “This year, we made a profit. This takes time, especially for an independent brand."

She added: "Now that I have laid down the groundwork for the [fashion] house, the real work can begin. With clothes, beauty and makeup products in the range already. This is just the beginning. I have lots of ambitions, and I work hard to achieve my goals. I never wait for things to just fall into my lap. It’s such an exciting time.”

The couple wowed fans when they released their highly-anticipated Netflix series, Beckham, last year in which they opened up about their lives, showing people there's more to them than just glitz and glamour. The show had the streaming platform's biggest audience of the year in the UK by a wide margin and people clearly liked what they watched.

David says it gave the artist formerly known as Posh Spice the chance to show her true colours after leaving fans in stitches when the couple had words when he told her to 'tell the truth' when it came to her privileged upbringing. The former England captain claimed we have now seen the person he's loved for almost three decades

In an interview with Variety, he said: “I think Victoria came out with this documentary and everyone was like, ‘Oh, my God, that person that David’s been saying about for the last 27 years, that is her,’ - it’s not just about the non-smile and the pout. That’s what I see every single day.

The Mirror has contacted the Beckhams' reps for comment.
