France is a top pick for UK holidaymakers, famed for its laid-back lifestyle, stunning scenery, and delicious cuisine.

But while the southern regions are celebrated for their sunny climate, cities like Marseille and Bordeaux are often overcrowded with tourists. For those looking to dodge the crowds on their next French getaway, one travel expert has recommended the charming town of Uzes.

Laura Longwell from Travel Addicts said: "The old town of Uzes is ringed by circular streets. In the Middle Ages, these streets were walls designed to protect the Duke's Castle at its heart. Visiting the town, you can still see towers, medieval gardens, the castle, and streets that make you feel like you've stepped back in history about 800 years."

Nestled about an hour and a half from Montpellier, Uzes may be small with just 8,400 locals - but it's steeped in history. Founded during Roman times, it originally served as a hub for water distribution to nearby Nimes via aqueducts. Though much has evolved over the centuries, Uzes still boasts numerous historical treasures, including its 17th century cathedral, ensuring visitors a rich journey through time, reports the Express.

Laura also said that Uzes provided a true taste of French life, suggesting that those in search of food and souvenirs visit the town's markets. She explained: "On market days - Wednesday and Saturday - much of the town feels taken over by the market sprawling through the streets, though it is centred around the Place aux Herbes. Wednesday is focused on food, including locally grown produce and specialities. The Saturday market adds flowers and household items, such as linens, housewares, clothes, and jewellery."

Finally, those desiring something a bit more unusual during their Uzes visit are recommended to pay a visit to the Musee 1900. As the name implies, this museum gives an insight into life at the start of the 20th century, showcasing more than 3,500 articles from the time period. These range from cars and motorcycles through to agricultural tools, furniture, and even a selection of antique shop fronts that line a back-in-time street. Kids - and no doubt parents too - will especially enjoy the chance to climb in some of the old vehicles, such as the authentic 1950s Vespa. Adult entry costs €11, with a reduced fee available for students, children and those with reduced mobility.

Return flights from London to Nîmes Alès Camargue Cévennes Airport start at just £39, and the airport is about 45 minutes away by car. Hotels in Uzes are concentrated in the centre in the city, with budget rooms going from around £40 per night. Those looking to splash out might want to book in at the La Maison D'Uzès, a five-star hotel set in a 17th-century mansion in the heart of the city which comes with its own Michelin-starred restaurant and luxury spa facilities.
