A pregnant woman's leg started rotting after she suffered a painful spider bite and doctors only prescribed her antibiotics.

Ketisley Aparecida Freitas Lessa developed a necrotising leg and chronic pain after being bitten by a brown spider, also known as a violin spider, at her home in Apiai, in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, while cleaning her bedroom on January 5.

Thankfully her baby was unaffected by the terrifying health problems. The 29-year-old law graduate discovered the spider on her left leg while taking a rest on her bed. After noticing bite marks on her other leg, Ketisley sought medical attention at a local hospital's emergency ward.

Despite not feeling any pain initially, medics prescribed her antibiotics and painkillers and sent her home without administering any anti-arachnid serum.

However, Ketisley returned to the clinic three days later after starting to experience severe pain.

She was admitted to the hospital's maternity ward after being diagnosed with necrosis, a condition which causes human tissue to die due to a lack of blood flow.

Speaking to local media, Ketisley previously said: "It started to hurt a lot. I couldn't walk. It also started to give me an allergic reaction all over my body. My skin was itching and turning red."

The young woman added: "They did a blood test and found poison in my bloodstream which affected my clotting and could cause me to bleed."

Ketisley was instructed to continue her antibiotic treatment at home. Despite the scare, her pregnancy remained unaffected by the spider incident, and she later welcomed a healthy baby Mirella into the world.

Recounting her ordeal, Ketisley revealed: "I was very scared and had an anxiety attack in the hospital, afraid of [the bite] affecting the baby."

It wasn't until the final stages of her pregnancy, when tests confirmed her daughter's well-being, that Ketisley's fears subsided, ensuring the spider bite wouldn't impact the delivery. The experience, however, left its mark on Ketisley, who once admired arachnids and sported six spider tattoos, but now finds herself frightened by them.

Brown spiders, which thrive in warmer climates globally, are typically non-aggressive and only bite defensively. Although dangerous spiders are rarely found in the UK there are documented cases. A giant huntsman spider travelled in a box of bananas more than 3,000 miles from Ivory Coast to the UK - and spooked staff at a primary school.

The spider - a Heteropoda venatoria - hitched a ride in the cardboard box to jump about three feet in front of office employees at the school. Dani Zenith, a teaching assistant, said: "The office staff and the ladies in their mid-twenties were screaming, and a couple of us older staff members in our forties wondered what was going on. We happily caught said spider while they were screaming and freaking out. We weren't scared – we're kind of enthusiasts anyway."

The huntsman is notorious for its size, and can have a leg span of up to five inches when fully grown. this specimen was a juvenile male, estimated by Dani to be six centimetres across.

The school, in Croydon, south London, regularly receives produce from its council for the children. Staff were unpacking a box last week when they encountered the arachnid, which came from Ivory Coast according to the container's labelling.
