New findings reveal the riskiest spots for pedestrians across the UK, with the City of London taking the top spot.

A study conducted by Howden Insurance looked into the Department for Transport Statistics from 2013 to 2022, uncovering areas with the highest pedestrian-involved accidents. Topping the list was the City of London, where a staggering 28.15% of all accidents involved pedestrians during the study period. Notably, 2018 emerged as the most dangerous year, with 32.49% of collisions involving pedestrians.

Following closely behind was Dundee City, Scotland's most hazardous area for pedestrians. Over the years 2013 to 2022, an average of 23.98% Westminster, a bustling part of London, clinches the third spot in pedestrian accident statistics. Over the years from 2013 to 2022, an average of 23.43% of accidents here involved pedestrians. Alarmingly, the year 2013 stood out as particularly dangerous, with pedestrians involved in 29.7% of collisions.

Moving on to fourth place was Oldham, representing the North West region among the rankings. Between 2013 and 2022, approximately 22.63% of accidents in Oldham involved pedestrians on average. Highlighting a worrying trend, 2022 emerged as the most hazardous year for pedestrians, with a staggering 32.81% of collisions involving them.

In response to these findings, a spokesperson from Howden Insurance expressed concern. He said: "While overall road safety has seen an improvement in many areas in the past ten years, its cause for concern that in some areas it is still an issue, like with Oldham seeing its most dangerous year in 2022.

“With the idea of walkable cities being pushed by many city councils, it’s important that pedestrian safety is heavily considered to ensure people still feel it’s a sensible idea to walk instead of driving.”

Next on the list came Camden in London, where 21.41% of accidents occurred. Following closely behind are Liverpool in the North West at 20.92%, and Bolton, also in the Northwest, with 20.35%. Aberdeen City in Scotland sees 20.18% of accidents, while Manchester, rounding off the top 10, experiences 19.76% of road incidents.
