The Euros will be a £2.4billion home win for our battered booze sector with 600 million pints sunk in living rooms and pubs.
England and Scotland fans will drink 18 million pints a day over the 31-day tournament in Germany, digital firm Takepayments says. And if either side makes the semis or the July 14 final, pubs in England and Wales will be allowed to open until 1am. Beer sales at venues showing Euro 2020 games soared 64% but revenue fell 5% in places not showing the football.
The British Beer and Pub Association’s Emma McClarkin said the sector has weathered many challenges in recent years, adding: “Events like the Euros are crucial in generating extra business. I hope during this amazing summer of sport everyone can enjoy a beer and cheer on your team in your local.”
James Hawkins, of the Long Live the Local campaign, said: “There can be no better way to show your support for your local than by getting down the pub to watch the Euros matches.”
Rick Robinson, 58, of the Willoughby Arms in Kingston, South-West London, said: “We’ll show every game and the England games will be all-ticket and will sell out. I think a lot of people are looking forward to the Euros this summer.”
