Arteta sends last Arsenal title rallying cry and says Gunners don't need miracle

Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal do not need a final day miracle - because winning the title is still on the cards.

Arsenal need to beat Everton and hope Manchester City slip up at home to West Ham for the Gunners to win the Premier League for the first time in 20 years. It will be the tenth time in Premier League history the title will be decided on the final day but on the nine previous occasions the team which started top ended up as champions.

‌City did have a final day scare two years ago when they trailed Aston Villa 2-0 before coming back to win to clinch the title and then also the famous Sergio Aguero last gasp winner against QPR in 2012 after they nearly lost the title.

‌But despite history and the odds stacked against them, Arteta insists it can still happen - and, even though he believes in miracles, he says they do not need one.

Gunners boss Arteta said: “Hopefully it's not a miracle, it's something that is doable, it can happen, and especially knowing the quality of West Ham and how they prepare for matches it's something that can happen. We need them, that's for sure. Do I believe in miracles? Yes. Let’s believe in miracles!”

‌It will come down to the finest of margins between Arsenal and City and another epic title race involving Pep Guardiola ’s reigning champions. Both managers had stressed the need to be “perfect” in the run-in but Arsenal blinked when they lost at home to Aston Villa last month and, ultimately, that could be the result which costs them the title.

‌City are unbeaten in 22 games, they are on a nine match winning streak in the Premier League but Arsenal have gone toe-to-toe this season, having also been involved in a title race last year. Arteta was brutal in his assessment of himself at the end of last season when he insisted he even questioned whether he was the right man for the job.

‌But Arteta said Arsenal can improve and it is good there is room for improvement - because that shows this team has the capacity to get better. They are likely to look to strengthen again in the market but Arteta also says he will again question his own decision making. Arteta added: “It's not about being unkind to yourself, it's being honest with yourself.

‌“In the end you know what you've done, why you've done it, certain decisions have been made really because you've felt them or because you hear them, or at the right time you had enough arguments to make them.

‌“That's the assessment and then just move on. Everything is not perfect and hopefully it's far from perfect, that means you have a lot of room to improve and that's what you have to do.”
