Mauricio Pochettino revealed he had dinner with chairman Todd Boehly on Friday in the clearest sign yet that he will remain in charge of Chelsea next season.

But the head coach refused to divulge any details from the meal after the Blues sealed sixth place to guarantee European football with a fifth consecutive win.

Pochettino is expected to have a season review with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart in the coming days.

And after offering a series of coy comments in recent weeks, Pochettino said of the debrief: “I don’t have an idea about this but I can tell you on Friday night Todd invited me for dinner and it was a very nice dinner. I don’t know about this review. My staff tomorrow is flying [on holiday], I’m staying a few more days in London and my phone is going to be on.

“I’m not going to talk about [the dinner] but if I invite you alone and we have a dinner, it's not for a bad thing. If I need to tell you something [bad], I say go for a coffee.”

Pochettino said that he was “proud” of his players for their strong finish and vowed that his young squad “are going to be much better next season, for sure.”

He does not expect as much activity in the transfer market and added: “I think we will have 80 to 85% of the same players. It’s about having continuity in the ideas and the knowledge between them. It's important for the club to create that.”

Moises Caicedo, the £115m signing from Brighton last summer, finally scored his first Chelsea goal with a stunner from more than 50 yards before Raheem Sterling made it 2-0 against the Cherries. But Benoit Badiashile conceded an unlucky own goal and former Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke drove an added time sitter over the bar from three yards.

The result guarantees European football for Chelsea next season. If Manchester City win next weekend's FA Cup final, the Blues will be in the Europa League but if United are to triumph at Wembley then Chelsea will take their place in the Conference League.

Andoni Iraola watched Bournemouth slip to 12th in the final standings after a creditable first season in charge of the Cherries and said: “We could not ask more from our players. We missed some clinicality in our chances to score."
