Kate Garraway has showed off her garden after admitting it had left her "overwhelmed" following husband Derek Draper's death.
The Good Morning Britain presenter, 57, lost her beloved husband earlier this year after he died following four years of serious health problems. Derek, 56, was hospitalised with Covid in 2020 and had his wife and their two children Darcey, 18, and Billy, 14, at his side throughout. Kate returned to her TV work shortly after Derek's funeral and has been open about her grief.
She recently marked her first birthday without her husband and was supported by her family. Kate's parents gifted her a wheelbarrow as she revealed her garden had "got so out of control" as she has "been racing around trying to keep head above water". Over the weekend, Kate provided an update on her work so far and shared her garden for the first time with fans.
The TV star gave a tour of her "healing" space, which holds special memories of her time with Derek. She said: "I have had the most amazing day in the garden. I loved doing the garden when Derek wasn't well because it felt like when I was planting and doing stuff, when we could get him outside he could come and be with me."
Kate admitted: "It's been a bit sad and the weather has been against us, and life has just been so hectic I haven't done it." She then showed off her progress and added: "What's been lovely is just sort of… being here really." The mum-of-two recalled how much she loved the garden when she moved into the house with Derek.
GMB fans furious as show is cancelled and replaced with bizarre choiceThey purchased the family home after "only having a small patio big enough to have a glass of wine on". Kate recently showed off her parent's gift as she shared a heartfelt message. She said: "To the people who were there on the 1st birthday - Mum & Dad. You know my garden is my #happyplace but have been feeling overwhelmed recently as it’s got so out of control as have just been racing around trying to keep head above water.
"So they surprised me with this wheelbarrow saying that even though our garden isn’t big “it helps when lugging & carrying “ . Not everyone’s first choice for a prezzie but I couldn’t be happier !!! Love you so much mum and dad - you always know the best way to get me out there & going forward. I can’t wait to get my hands dirty this weekend & get going! Have a fab one everyone!!! # gardening #lovenature #getyourhandsdirty."
Kate was flooded with supportive messages from her fans as one said: "Enjoy. Gardening is my therapy too! We all need a wheelbarrow." Another added: "Definitely my happy place. Enjoy whatever you plant/ dig up or just tidy. Xx." Someone else commented: "We love your mum and dad Kate they definitely know how to get you going with the garden this will do help you mentally & physically! Enjoy Derek would be proud and no doubt will be by your side xx."
