2024 has seen us bid farewell to several beloved celebrities. 

We take a moment to reflect on the celebrities who have passed away this year so far and celebrate the remarkable lives they led.

Which celebrities died in June 2024?

Donald Sutherland

Legendary actor Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88.

After a six decade acting career, Donald died after a long illness just months before his memoir release.

He was best known for parts in The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H, and most recently as President Snow in The Hunger Games series.

R&B star Anita Pointer of The Pointer Sisters dies aged 74R&B star Anita Pointer of The Pointer Sisters dies aged 74

The actor died in Miami, Florida, from an unspecified long illness, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sutherland was a father of five, including Emmy Award-winning actor Kiefer, veteran CAA Media Finance executive Roeg, actors Angus and Rossif, and daughter Rachel.

Kiefer, 57, mourned his father's death and remembered him as "one of the most important actors" of all time.

"With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away," Kiefer wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

"I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad, or ugly.

"He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

Rob Burrow

Rob Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019, just two years after retiring from a 17-season rugby league career.

The former rugby player passed away peacefully at Pinderfield's Hospital near his home surrounded by his loving family after becoming ill earlier this week.

The small but mighty rugby icon played his entire career with Leeds Rhinos and won every honour with the club as part of their golden generation.

He scooped eight Super League titles in an illustrious playing career while also representing England and Great Britain internationally.

The Prince of Wales paid tribute to Burrow describing him as a “legend of Rugby League” who had a “huge heart”.

William added: “He taught us, ‘in a world full of adversity, we must dare to dream’.”

Nicholas Ball

Nicholas Ball was 78 when he died on June 6.

The EastEnders actor had an acting career spanning decades, and news of his death sparked a huge number of tributes being paid from former co-stars and showbiz pals.

Ball had only recently filmed the rural-set drama The Kingdom By The Sea, opposite Coronation Street actress Rula Lenska.

News of Nicholas Ball's death was announced by his agent on June 6th, 2024.

It was announced Ball had died after a battle with a short illness.

There hadn't been any news beforehand that Ball was unwell.

TV doctor Michael Mosley’s wife Clare tragically confirmed her "brilliant" and "wonderful" husband had been found dead.

The beloved broadcaster’s body was discovered behind a coastal bar on the Greek island of Symi.

Mystery had surrounded his vanishing after the 67-year-old left Clare and two close friends on the beach of Saint Nikolas to go for a walk.

He is believed to have been heading back to their holiday accommodation in Symi town when he took a wrong turn while leaving the village of Pedi.

Dr Mosley then is understood to have headed northeast - ending up on a long and hard trek in rocky, difficult and barren landscape beneath a scorching sun.

The TV star did not have his phone with him - having left it at the group's accommodation.

And all he had with him was an umbrella, his watch, his rucksack, a bottle of water, and his wallet.

Michael managed to reach the Agia Marina.

But tragically, just a few dozen metres from safety he collapsed behind a bar near a fence.

His This Morning co-stars paid tribute to him saying they were “heartbroken”.

Further testing is underway and the results are needed before an exact cause of death can be found.

Matija Sarkic

Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic tragically passed away aged just 26 on June 15.

The nine-cap Montenegro star reportedly fell ill while on international duty in the town of Budva.

Montenegrin state-owned TV station RTCG report that Sarkic went for a walk with pals, had dinner in a restaurant and returned to his apartment early.

He is believed to have told friends he felt ill after waking up at around 6am this morning and they called an ambulance but it was too late.

Millwall confirmed the sad news in a statement, which read: "Millwall football club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26.

"Sarkic, The Lions' No1 goalkeeper, made 33 appearances for the club since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2023.

"Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija's family and friends at this immensely sad time.”

Kevin Campbell

Arsenal and Everton legend Kevin Campbell died aged 54 after a short illness on June 15.

Emotional tributes poured in for the ex-striker, who spent a memorable two decades on the pitch and later became a pundit.

Campbell made 213 appearances for Arsenal between 1988 and 1995, scoring 59 goals in all competitions.

During his time at the Gunners he won the old First Division, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

Arsenal said: "We are devastated to learn that our former striker Kevin Campbell has died after a short illness.

"Kevin was adored by everyone at the club. All of us are thinking of his friends and family at this difficult time.”

Dario G

Dario G star Paul Spencer died on June 17 at the age of 53 following a cancer diagnosis.

The 90s pop legend was best known for their debut single Sunchyme which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart.

Fans will remember the iconic video featuring dancers in incredible safari costumes and makeup.

The group - named after former Crewe Alexandra manager Dario Gradi - consisted of three DJs: Scott Rosser, Stephen Spencer and Paul.

The trio also enjoyed success with the song Carnaval de Paris which was recorded for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

Paul announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, he had been diagnosed with stage four rectal cancer in June last year.

Morgan Spurlock

Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, the mastermind behind the Oscar-nominated documentary Super Size Me, died at age 53.

Spurlock died in Upstate New York on May 24 from complications of cancer, his family announced.

"It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother, Morgan," the filmmaker's brother, Craig Spurlock, said.

"Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity.”

A West Virginia native, Morgan Spurlock rose to prominence in 2004 with the release of his documentary Super Size Me, which he starred in.

The documentary followed Spurlock for 30 days, during which he ate McDonald's every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

By the end of the experiment, the then-32-year-old Spurlock claimed he had gained 25 pounds, saw a spike in his cholesterol level, and suffered from depression and liver dysfunction.

The sequel Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! was initially released on YouTube Red in 2017 but was dropped after Spurlock admitted to a history of sexual misconduct that stretched back to his college days.

Sam Rubin

This Morning entertainment reporter Sam Rubin died on May 10.

The TV star, who was also a longtime anchor for KTLA news in the States, suffered a fatal heart attack. He was 64.

This Morning paid tribute, and said: “We have very heavy hearts this weekend with the news from Los Angeles that our Hollywood reporter Sam Rubin has died at the age of 64.

"Sam was an Emmy-winning entertainment correspondent and presenter for Los Angeles' No 1 morning show on KTLA, and regularly broadcast live into This Morning.

"He woke up Tinseltown every day for decades with his likeable charm and knowledgeable take on the movie world, he was on first-name terms with the stars and became affectionately known as ‘ Hollywood Sam’. We will miss him.”

Bernard Hill

Titanic and Lord of the Rings star Bernard Hill sadly died aged 79.

The actor, who also featured in stand-out hits like Boys from the Black Stuff and Gandhi, passed away on May 5.

His agent Lou Coulson today confirmed his tragic death to the BBC, and tributes are already pouring in for the star.

Hill played Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning film Titanic.

He also went on to star as King Théoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Susan Buckner

Grease film star Susan Buckner died at the age of 72 on May 2.

The actress gained fame playing Patty Simcox, the perky cheerleader pal of Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy in the movie musical.

Her family revealed Susan died peacefully surrounded by loved ones in Miami.

South African footballer Luke Fleurs was tragically killed after reportedly being shot dead in a botched carjacking.

The Kaiser Chiefs defender was allegedly fatally wounded during the shocking attempt in the Florida region of Gauteng, ten miles west of Johannesburg.

Centre-back Fleurs joined the Joburg-based club from SuperSport United on a two-year contract in October 2023.

Upon signing, he wrote on Instagram: "Dreams do come true," with a photo of his beaming smile in the famous gold shirt.

Just two weeks later, the Cape Town-born star added: "Yeah, momma, I made it out of the streets, I hope you finally proud."

Fleurs was dubbed one of the brightest rising defensive talents in South African football.

Adrian Schiller died “suddenly and unexpectedly,” at the age of 60 on April 3.

The Brit was best known for playing Aethelhelm in the historical series The Last Kingdom and the character Cornelius Penge in the ITV series Victoria.

Scott Marshall Partners, who represented the Prime Suspect actor for more than three decades, said in a statement: “He has died far too soon, and we, his family and close friends are devastated by the loss.

“His death was sudden and unexpected and no further details around its cause are yet available.

“A prodigiously talented actor, he had just returned from Sydney, where he had been appearing in The Lehman Trilogy and was looking forward to continuing the international tour in San Francisco.”

Stefano Cherchi

Jockey Stefano Cherchi tragically died aged 23 on April 3, after a terrible fall left him with a head injury and internal bleeding.

The Sardinian rider, best known in Britain for recording winners under trainer Marco Botti, had been racing in Australia.

His fall was labelled a 'freak accident' by legendary rider Kieren Fallon, whose daughter he was dating.

Cherchi was thrown from the saddle when his horse Hasime, who had been sent off 18-5 favourite, came down in a one-mile race in the Australian capital.

Brittany Fallon had travelled to Australia to be at her boyfriend's bedside.

She wrote in an Instagram post after his death that “life will never be the same”.

Brian McCardie

Line of Duty star Brian McCardie "suddenly" died at home aged just 59.

The actor was best known for playing John Thomas 'Tommy' Hunter in the BBC drama.

Brian died on April 28, 2024, with his heartbroken family releasing a statement which read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian James McCardie, beloved son, brother, uncle and dear friend to so many.

“Brian passed away suddenly at home on Sunday 28th April.

"A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched many lives,

Terry Carter

Battlestar Galactica star Terry Carter died at the age of 95 on April 23.

The actor, who broke barriers in the TV industry in the 1950s, was confirmed dead by his son.

In the mid-1950s, Terry was the first Black actor to be a series regular on a sitcom series.

He portrayed Private Sugarman on The Phil Silvers Show for 92 episodes from 1955-1959.

From 1965 to 1968, the actor was the first Black TV news anchor and movie critic for WBZ-TV Eyewitness News.

James Laurenson

Coronation Street star James Laurenson died aged 84 after a stellar five-decade career on April 18.

The actor, who moved to Britain from his native New Zealand in the early 1960s, worked in theatre, television and film.

He made his film debut in 1969 with a small part in Ken Russell's Women In Love.

In 1970 he made television history in Christopher Marlowe's Edward II as Piers Gaveston, performing tele's first gay kiss with Sir Ian McKellen.

Sir Ian once said kissing James, who was not gay, “was a bonus throughout the run”.

Vincent Friell

Trainspotting star Vincent Friell died aged 64.

Scores of tributes have poured in for the actor, who starred in several iconic creations from Scottish film and TV.

The Glasgow-born star shot to fame for his role as Will, one-half of the tour-bus robbing Edinburgh duo in the legendary film Restless Natives.

He also went on to star as Diane's Father in the iconic film Trainspotting.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star was reportedly involved in a motorcycle accident, resulting in his death.

Perdomo's representatives released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, requesting the actor's fans and followers to respect his family's privacy during this tragic time.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Chance Perdomo’s untimely passing as a result of a motorcycle accident," the representatives' statement said.

Production firm Big Finish said: "We are utterly heartbroken to confirm the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Pamela Salem."

Robin Windsor

Strictly Come Dancing star Robin Windsor died aged 44 on February 20.

The professional dancer finished runner-up in the 2012 series of the hit BBC show with actress Lisa Riley.

Robin first appeared on the BBC series with Patsy Kensit in 2010, reaching week nine of the competition, before being eliminated at the same stage with EastEnders legend Anita Dobson two years later.

The news of his death was confirmed by Sisco Entertainment, which represented him in various areas of theatre and corporate entertainment.

A statement said: "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the tragic passing of our beloved friend, Robin Windsor.

"Robin’s presence in Come What May was more than just a performance; it was an embodiment of passion, grace, and sheer talent.

The comedian played Kevin Bishop in the UK version of the classic sitcom starring Ricky Gervais.

Ewen's portrayal of the deadpan accountant was praised for a string of comedy moments - including dressing as Ali G.

He also described his weakness on a staff appraisal as “eczema” and was famed for his iconic love of Scotch eggs.

Tributes flooded in for the star led by his co-star Ricky Gervais.

He wrote: "Extremely sad news. The very funny and very lovely Ewen MacIntosh, known to many as 'Big Keith' from The Office, has passed away. An absolute original. RIP."

Steve Wright

BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright tragically died aged 69 on February 12, after bringing joy to listeners for more than 40 years.

The veteran DJ presented Steve Wright in the Afternoon and fronted Top of the Pops.

He also presented the popular Sunday Love Songs mid-morning show on Radio 2.

His family said in a moving statement: "It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright.

"In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother, Laurence and his father Richard.

"Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK's most enduring and popular radio personalities."

Henry Fambrough

Legendary Motown singer Henry Fambrough died at the age of 85 on February 7.

The star was the last surviving original member of the hit group The Spinners.

His spokesperson revealed "he died peacefully" at his home in northern Virginia.

Henry's death came just months after The Spinners was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Michael Jayston

Only Fools and Horses star Michael Jayston died aged 88 after a "short illness".

The actor's agent announced the news on behalf of his family.

He played the Valeyard, the Doctor's dark side, in all fourteen episodes of Doctor Who from 1986.

He also made appearances in EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

Toby Keith

Legendary country star Toby Keith passed away after battling cancer.

The musician, 62, was surrounded by his family when he died on February 5.

Keith revealed in June 2022 that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer and had been receiving chemotherapy and other treatments.

A statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, said, “He fought his fight with grace and courage.

"Please respect the privacy of his family at the time."

Ian Lavender

Dad's Army and EastEnders star Ian Lavender died aged 77 on February 2.

He played Private Pike in the hit BBC sitcom and was the last surviving member of the cast.

In later years Ian had also become a popular character in the BBC soap EastEnders playing Derek Harkinson.

Announcing his death, a Dad's Army spokesperson said his passing "truly marks the end of an era."

The statement added: "His wonderful performance as Private Frank Pike will live on for decades to come.

"He leaves behind a legacy of laughter enjoyed by millions. We will dedicate this year’s tour to his memory.

"Our thoughts and love are with Ian’s wonderful wife Miki, their family and close friends."

Jonnie Irwin

A Place in the Sun presenter Jonnie Irwin died aged 50 on February 2, after enduring a gruelling battle with lung cancer.

Jonnie, 50, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2020 - a week after filming the popular show in Italy.

Tragically, the cancer spread to his brain and in 2022 Jonnie revealed he had just six months to live.

A statement about his death posted on Instagram read: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Jonnie’s passing. 

“A truly remarkable soul, he fought bravely against cancer with unwavering strength and courage. Jonnie touched the lives of so many with his kindness, warmth, and infectious spirit."

Crossroads star Charmian Abrahams died aged 96 after being hit by a delivery van.

The actress - best known for playing Mavis Hooper in the soap - died in Harborne, Birmingham, on January 15.

In a statement - released through West Midlands Police - the family said: "Charmian was a much-loved aunt and great-aunt and a dear friend to many.

"At 96 she was still full of life and energy and fiercely independent.

"In her working life she had enjoyed a long career as an actor on stage and screen, performing alongside many great theatrical figures.

"We are devastated that her life has been brought to an end so suddenly and tragically, but we will treasure our memories of her zest for life and the many good times we shared with her."

Annie Nightingale

Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale passed away aged 83 on January 11.

The trailblazing presenter became the first female DJ on the station in 1970 - launching the careers of dozens of unknown artists.

Her family paid tribute, saying Annie passed away at her home in London after a "short illness".

They added: "Annie was a pioneer, trailblazer and an inspiration to many.

"Her impulse to share that enthusiasm with audiences remained undimmed after six decades of broadcasting on BBC TV and radio globally."

Georgina Hale

Actress Georgina Hale died aged 80 on January 4, after an incredible TV and theatre career spanning 50 years.

The star performer was known for a host of roles and featured on hit shows Emmerdale and Hollyoaks.

The actress was also well-known for her award-winning work in the films of Ken Russell.

Her performance in Mahler (1974) was rewarded with a Bafta film award as most promising newcomer.

She also received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for her performance in the original London production of Steaming.

Starsky and Hutch actor David Soul died on January 4.

He famously played Hutch in the hit detective series.

His wife Helen Snell said her husband died after a "valiant battle for life".

David was also a singer, and would be known for his many talents outside acting, his wife said.

A devastated Helen wrote: "David Soul - beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother - died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family.

"He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend.

"His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched."

Mary Poppins actress Glynis Johns died on January 4.

The star, who played Mrs. Winifred Banks in the hit 1964 film that starred Julie Andrews in the title role, was 100.

Johns' publicist, Mitch Clem, confirmed her death to Los Angeles ABC affiliate KABC.

She died of natural causes and was living in West Hollywood, California, Clem said.

Derek Draper

Kate Garraway's husband tragically died on January 3, following a four-year battle with Covid.

Derek Draper, 56, was left fighting for life in hospital after suffering a massive heart attack in December 2024.

Kate said: "I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away.

"As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications."
