The decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino came after the Argentine met with the top brass at the club.

Chelsea announced on Tuesday evening that Pochettino was out of a job after just one season in charge. The Blues ended the season with five straight wins, rallying to finish sixth in the Premier League and secure European football for next season, but that was not enough.

The parting of ways, one year into his two-year contract, has been described as mutual and leaves Chelsea looking for yet another manager. Since taking over two years ago, Clearlake Capital have now burned through five different managers, with Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Bruno Saltor and Frank Lampard preceding Pochettino.

Pochettino concluded the season with a 2-1 win over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, but that victory on Sunday was sandwiched between much more important events. Firstly, he met with co-owner Todd Boehly on Friday to discuss his future.

"All I can tell you is on Friday night, Todd invited me for a dinner and it was a very nice dinner together,” Pochettino said on the weekend when asked about the upcoming end-of-season review. Boehly was understood to have been supportive but non-committal towards Pochettino, who left none-the-wiser about his job security.

After beating Bournemouth, there were more talks, with sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley taking a leading role. Pochettino spent several hours in the duo’s company on Monday and Tuesday, during which they discussed the path forwards towards the 2024/25 campaign, via the summer transfer window and pre-season.

The Guardian reports that the Chelsea hierarchy had some concerns over Pochettino’s “antiquated” training style, which is known to be brutal. Meanwhile, Pochettino’s hopes of being given more say over the club’s transfer policy was another problem.

The 52-year-old also met with co-owner Behdad Eghbali, where his future became clearer. While Boehly was understood to be open to keeping Pochettino, the same could not be said for Eghbali, who carries a great deal of influence and wants a head coach who will work with what he’s given, rather than be involved in player trading.

In the statement released by Chelsea on Tuesday, Pochettino said: "Thank you to the Chelsea ownership group and sporting directors for the opportunity to be part of this football club's history. The club is now well positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come."

Winstanley and Stewart said: "On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season. He will be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him all the very best in his future coaching career."
