Victoria Beckham spent her "lonely" life in Madrid "chain-smoking" amid reports of her husband's alleged affair, writes Tom Bower.

The investigative journalist's new book The House of Beckham: Money, Sex and Power, which is being serialised by the Mirror before its release on June 20, takes a look at the couple's relationship when David was playing for Real Madrid.

In 2003, the Beckham's marriage was rocked to its foundations when it was alleged that David had an affair with his personal assistant, Rebecca Loos, while playing football in Spain. David has always denied the allegations.

Before Rebecca sold her story to the News of the World, Victoria, claims the book, delayed her move to Spain. Giving his take on the former WAG's experience in the Spanish capital, Bower writes: “Her life in Madrid was lonely and unhappy. Although she had everything money could buy she was isolated. With few friends, she was unwilling to learn Spanish. Her diet, rigorous exercise and chain-smoking reflected her anxieties.”

In the recent Netflix documentary, Beckham, David admitted he doesn't know how the couple got through the rumours, vowing he knew they had to "fight for their family". The Inter Miami star said he "felt sick every day" as their names hit headlines in the months following the explosive claims – which, at the time, he branded as "ludicrous".

Opening up for the documentary, Victoria revealed the couple were 'against each other'. At the time, she was based in the UK where Brooklyn and Romeo were attending school while David was in Spain working. David said: "Every time that we woke up we felt there was something else ... we both felt at the time that we were not losing each other but drowning."

They were asked how their marriage survived to which the former footballer responded: "I don't know how we got through it, in all honestly. Victoria is everything to me, to see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we're fighters and at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for. There were some days that I would wake up and think, 'How am I going to go to work? How am I going to walk on to that training pitch? How am I going to look as if nothing's wrong?' I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes, 'How am I going to do this?'"

After the rumours regarding David and Rebecca were published by News Of The World, Victoria moved to Madrid to be closer to David. The couple snapped up a £3million home there and she even gave birth to Cruz in the Spanish capital. However, the former Spice Girl was unhappy about leaving the UK and 'resented' her husband.

Reflecting on her unhappiness in the Netflix documentary, Victoria revealed: "As soon as I could get the kids in school, we then move full-time. Did I resent David? If I am being totally honest, yes I did," she said. "It was probably, if I'm being honest, the most unhappy I have ever been in my life."
