A mum has been sent to the same prison where her daughter is already serving time, after being caged for a knifepoint robbery.
Malinda Shaw had an arrangement to sleep and grab a bath at her ex-partner's address, despite their 15-year relationship ending last October. But when Shaw was stood up by her ex-partner she grabbed a kitchen knife and demanded £100. The incident was captured on CCTV inside the property earlier this year, Stoke on Trent Live reports.
“Ms Shaw repeatedly said the victim had to give her the money or she’d stab him and she pushed it against the victim and jabbed the knife towards him," Emmanuel Coniah, prosecuting told the court. "She caught him on the right shoulder but caused no injury. She swung the knife at him and picked up his wallet, and he said ‘Put the knife down and I’ll give you the money’.
"She accidentally caught him in the stomach but there was no injury. She noticed there was CCTV in the victim’s house and left the knife and the victim threw the money at her and told her to leave. He had to survive on little money because he was not due to be paid until the end of the month.”
Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard Shaw, of no fixed address, was entitled to the £100 because her benefits were still being paid into her ex-partner's account. Stuart Muldoon, mitigating, said: “This is a sad case of a woman just a few days off her 47th birthday and she is experiencing her first time in custody in the same prison as her daughter.
Obsessed mum accused neighbour of running brothel and threatened to kill her"Despite being extremely fearful she says her time in custody has been helpful to her. She is taking her anti-psychotic medication which she hasn’t taken since her younger years and she is going to Alcoholics Anonymous as well as going to the chapel where she sings hymns with other inmates and she’s also doing gardening.
“She is vulnerable to bad relationships because of the issues she has. She was initially taking monkey dust recreationally and began taking it every day and drinking alcohol in excess after family members died. When she comes out she will be living with her current partner in Fenton.”
Judge Michael Maher handed Shaw a 12-month prison sentence after she admitted robbery. It followed CCTV from the property being shown to the court. He said: "You were caught on camera swinging the knife and you were becoming perilously close to him. It’s not surprising that he was terrified. You then realised you were being recorded, dropped the knife, and you were given the money. It’s sad because you’re a 46-year-old woman in the same prison as your daughter."
