Product expiration dates, particularly when it comes to your skincare regime, are not to be taken lightly.

They serve as a guide for how long a product remains both safe to use and effective. Should you use them beyond the 'best before' date, you run the risk that active components may become futile or even harmful.

Scott McGlynn, skin care guru and internet sensation known to his 245,000 followers as @scottmcglynnofficial, was compelled to sound the alarm about the importance of heeding the expiration dates on such products. His words of caution came following an incident where a woman suffered adverse effects from using a product past its prime.

A viral Instagram clip with over 9,000 views captures Scott's reaction to footage of a lady experiencing a severe burning sensation after applying an out-of-date acne treatment an ordeal that hastened her to frantically rinse her face.

However, by that time, the damage had already been done and she needed to go to hospital with a swollen face, covered with blemishes and scabs. During his message, Scott cautioned: "Guys, pay attention on your expiry dates on your products This one's got 12 months. One opened, expires.

"These are there for a reason. And I just want to say this girl has fully recovered and she's sharing her story online. But yes, pay attention to that."

Moreover, Scott shared a nifty trick for those uncertain about the lifespan of their opened skincare items. He advised in the video description: "Look at the back of your product and you see a number and M... example 6M / 12M."

Skincare products usually come with two types of expiry indicators - the shelf life and the PAO. The shelf life gives you an idea of how long the product will remain in its original condition, unopened.

The PAO, typically represented by an open jar symbol followed by a number and an "M," tells you the number of months the product can be used after it's been opened (for example, "12M" stands for 12 months).

A lot of skincare products have preservatives added to them to prevent microbial growth and prolong their lifespan. However, once these preservatives lose their effectiveness, the risk of contamination rises.

How long your skincare products last also depends on how they're stored. Factors like heat, light, and air can all reduce a product's lifespan. It's recommended to store skincare items in a cool, dark place and make sure they're tightly sealed after each use.
