Newcastle star Kieran Trippier has been spotted with an ice pack on his ankle in what will be a major concern for England.

The right-back has been named in Gareth Southgate ’s provisional squad for this summer’s Euros. Before that, he was selected to play a role in Newcastle’s controversial post-season friendly with Premier League rivals Tottenham.

He was selected by Howe from the start but was withdrawn after 37 minutes. He initially ran off the pitch with some suggesting that the substitution was pre-planned. But Trippier was then spotted holding an ice pack on his ankle.

England boss Southgate will certainly be hoping that the 33-year-old has avoided a serious problem. The 46-time international spent the majority of the second half of the season on the sidelines with a calf issue and was struggling for form before that.

Regardless, he still made 39 appearances in all competitions for Eddie Howe’s side, providing 11 assists as Newcastle finished seventh in the Premier League. Should he have picked up a problem, that could force Southgate - who has already been bemoaning the squad’s injury issues - into a rethink.

Speaking at his announcement of a 33-man squad, he said: "There is a significant number of injuries. We have an important physical challenge where people need more work.

“Some players need minutes in games, other players don't need refreshing. We have navigated that well in our previous end of season tournaments.

"We've never had so many unknown situations. We've had tournaments where we have taken a player who is pretty certain to be back for certain moments of the tournament. We've had tournaments where players have been in the Champions League finals."

Southgate is already dealing with a number of issues at full-back. Ben Chilwell has been left out of the side, while Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is also struggling for fitness.

Elsewhere, Trippier also spoke out on Newcastle’s post-season trip, claiming it was ‘not ideal’ preparation. He said: “My expression says it all! It’s not ideal because it’s a tournament year, I understand why the club are doing it.

“I’ve done it at Tottenham and Madrid but from my own experience of it – in a tournament year (with the Euros and Copa America) it’s not ideal. But we’re players, we’ve got to do what’s right for the club, for the club to move forward.”

Newcastle drew 1-1 with Tottenham after goals from James Maddison and Alexander Isak. The Magpies won a resultant penalty shootout, with Bryan Gil missing the decisive kick for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
