'Hundreds' of festival goers have reported being hit by food poisoning after chowing down on Yorkshire puddings.
Download Festival saw multiple people complaining of a nasty bug, with reports centred around a stall serving up the traditional British delicacy. One man who fell ill said he spent half his time at the festival being sick, wiping out nearly two days of the event which costs up to £345 to attend.
Some 75,000 rock fans descended on Donington Park, Leicestershire, at the weekend for the annual event, which was this year headlined by Fall Out Boy, Queens of the Stone Age, Avenged Sevenfold and Sum 41. But the event was plagued with complaints of people struck by food poisoning.
Multiple fans who attended rushed to post about their experiences in a public Facebook group set up for 2024 attendees, citing a stall selling Yorkshire puddings for their disastrous experience. "I have had to stay at camp all day, I’m so ill and I know a lot more are too!" posted one hapless attendee. "What can we do about this!?"
Another claimed the wraps had her "sh***ing for Britain" while one woman claimed she even had to call an ambulance out after suffering horrendous food poisoning. She said: "Eaten from the same Yorkie place. Had to have an ambulance out!! Got to be something we can do because that place is still open and people going there have no idea. Lost the whole of Friday and a lot of Saturday… Gutted".
TUI customers' food poisoning torment ruined four-star Lanzarote New Year tripBronwyn Gwillym told The Mirror she fell ill on the Saturday after eating one of the Yorkshire puddings the day before, with the traditional Sunday roast dinner side all she ate that day. "I hand sanitised my hands and used cutlery provided. I felt fine that night but I woke up at around 3-4am with severe cramps."
Bronwyn said she was severely ill with a fever, diarrhoea and sickness all weekend, having "never known pain like it", and contacted the festival to complain. "I attend Download Festival yearly and it's my most looked-forward-to holiday but I unfortunately got to see very little," she added.
"I have contacted [Leicestershire Council's] Environmental Health and a member of my camp went to collect a sample pot that I will be sending in the post."
A separate victim said both she and her daughter were struck down after eating Yorkshire puddings from a stall and had to seek medical help. "The medics took loads of notes, of where, when and exactly what I ate in my Yorkshire pudding," she said.
Reports of illness were also seen on X (formerly Twitter), with one person writing: "The Yorkshire pudding at Download Festival has caused 100s of people to get the s**ts lol." Another said: "I would like to apologize [sic] to all Electric Callboy fans for my evangelising about the big Yorkshire pudding van at Download Festival for the last 18 years. (Apparently, they cancelled because one of them ate one and s**t his shoulders out.)"
An email sent to one victim, seen by The Mirror, said: "We are sorry that you have been unwell during your time at the festival. Environmental Health Officers working alongside the local council have been carrying out scheduled and additional inspections of food trader units across the festival site. Regular checks will be carried out throughout the rest of the weekend to ensure food safety standards are being met."
The Mirror has contacted Live Nation, Download's organisers, for a response. The food stall in question was unreachable for comment.
