The Foreign Office has issued a statement with a desperate search launched for a British teenager who is missing in Tenerife.

Jay Slater, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, vanished from the Spanish tourist spot after staying with people he met during a night out according to his friend. The 19-year-old was on holiday with Lucy and another pal for a music festival, but has since been reported missing to local police.

A desperate search is now underway on the island, with officials at the Foreign Office supporting Jay's family. A spokesperson for the department also confirmed that they are in touch with the local authorities in Tenerife. A representative of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced in a statement: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."

The last correspondence received from Jay by Lucy was roughly at 8am yesterday morning (July 17). He told her that he had tried to catch a bus from the apartment where he had been to stay but was having to walk instead, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Lucy described the area where Jay's phone location was tracked - in the Rural de Teno Park, or the National Park of Teno - as being 'in the middle of nowhere' and somewhere that is popular with hikers. She said the last time she heard from Jay, he said his phone battery was on 1 per cent, that he needed a drink of water and 'didn't know where he was'.

His phone has since died and he hasn't been traced. "I've never been so worried in my life", Lucy said. Jay's mum has flown out to Tenerife today to join the frantic search. The police in Tenerife are aware of his disappearance.
