A MAJOR retailer with 500 branches has announced the exact date one of its stores will close.

The Works is set to shut down its site in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, next month and customers have been told when they can go in shopping for the final time.

The discount retailer claims the decision was made after failing to agree on a new lease for the premises on Marygate.

Specialising in gifts, arts, crafts, toys, books and stationery, The Works has been a high street favourite for a number of years.

But the Berwick store will bring its shutters down for the final time on Friday, July 26.

It leaves customers with just five more weeks to shop in store.

A spokesperson for the retailer told the Northumberland Gazette: "We can confirm that we will be closing our Berwick-upon-Tweed store on the 26th of July.

“This has been a great location for The Works, but sadly we have been unable to agree on suitable lease terms to stay.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this closure and would like to thank customers for shopping at the store over the years."

Staff currently employed at the Berwick store will be offered the chance to relocate, the spokesperson added.

Customers have also been encouraged to continue shopping through the company's online website.

But for those who prefer to shop instore, the next nearest shop is 45 miles away in Morpeth - approximately a 50 minute drive.

Earlier this year, The Works announced it would be shutting its site in Penrith, Cumbria, after pulling down the shutters on several other shops and opening others elsewhere.

It confirmed that its shop in Penrith would shut its doors for the final time in mid-April, although no exact date was given.

Elsewhere, a supermarket giant set to shutter a beloved superstore has now revealed the exact date it will close.

Tesco will be pulling down the shutters on its site in Chippenham in just a matter of months, having previously announced the closure back in January

And a retailer loved by high street shoppers is closing all but one of its stores as it bids farewell to a key branch enjoyed by customers for 70 years.

The fashion chain has been a classic of Kent town centres for generations and the latest blow has inflicted a "a very sad time".
