A production of the acclaimed musical Bonnie and Clyde has unexpectedly been cancelled "with immediate effect" ahead of some scheduled dates on the tour in the coming months.

The UK and Ireland tour, which launched in February, was due to conclude in October. It was announced on Tuesday that it has now ended months earlier than planned, with a statement issued by those behind the tour on social media.

The statement, shared on platforms such as Instagram, read: "Bonnie & Clyde The Musical will conclude its UK & Ireland tour with immediate effect. We would like to thank the extremely hard working and endlessly talented cast and company that have entertained thousands of audience members across the country with this production."

It was stated that customers who have tickets for the now cancelled performances will be provided more information. The statement concluded: "Ticket holders will be contacted by their point of purchase shortly with further information."

The cast of the production had included the likes of former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley, 40. She was among the lead cast on the tour earlier this year alongside Sam Ferriday, Katie Tonkinson and Alex James-Hatton. Catherine played Blanche Barrow, whilst Sam, Katie and Alex starred as Marvin 'Buck' Barrow, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow respectively.

The production had been due to run at the Cliffs Pavilion in Southend from Tuesday to Saturday this week, prior to the news of the tour's immediate conclusion. It's understood that Catherine wasn't in the production at the moment, having begun a scheduled temporary break earlier this month. She's posted content from an apparent work trip abroad to Malta in recent days.

The actor had been part of the cast since the tour launched in February, though was briefly absent last month due to an apparent health issue. It's understood that she was being covered by Daisy Wood-Davis in the role of Blanche during her scheduled break between May and July.

The tour was due to take a hiatus in August, before resuming in September. Cast member Catherine was scheduled to return that month for the final run of performances. The tour had been due to end in Northampton on October 26.

The news that the touring production of Bonnie & Clyde has now ended months earlier than planned has been met with reaction on social media. One person said that they were "shocked" by the announcement, whilst others expressed sympathy for those involved in the tour. A number of fans took the opportunity to share positive reviews of the tour.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the production told the Mirror: "Bonnie & Clyde The Musical will conclude its UK & Ireland tour with immediate effect. The whatsonstage award winning musical for Best New Musical began its tour at Leicester Curve in February and has received a range of 5 stars reviews and standing ovations at venues across the country.

"Unfortunately, it has been concluded that due to disappointing ticket sales it is no longer financially viable to continue with the tour. We would like to thank the extremely hard working and endlessly talented cast and company that have entertained thousands of audience members across the country with this production."
