Gary Lineker's brother Wayne was branded a 'buffoon' as irate Ibiza locals and politicians slammed the star after he was knocked unconscious by an assailant.
Last week, Wayne shared his ordeal on Wednesday after collapsing in the street when he was attacked at 4am the same day on the party hotspot of Ibiza. A disturbing video emerged showing Wayne, who owns several hotspots on the island including the famous O Beach Club in San Antonio, attempting to shield himself with his arm during an altercation with a group of men who seemed to be harassing one of his female friends.
Footage showed Wayne getting knocked out by a thug and he later took to social media to thank fans for their support and reassure them that he's been doing okay. While friends and followers wished him well, local politicians and people were less sympathetic.
Leader of the Socialist Party on the local council Antonio Lorenzo claimed the star was the 'victim of his own brand of excess and drunkenness'. The politician added: "This will not be solved with more security measures; it will be solved with a change of the tourism model."
Wayne also owns Lineker's Bar which stays open until the early hours of the morning seven days a week, angering locals. Locals took to an Ibiza activist Facebook group to mock the star in a post which called Wayne the 'King of Ibiza'. One person accused him of 'destroying the island'.
Wayne Lineker says he dated Love Island winner before she found fameAnother said: "What is clear is that if this man and his businesses went elsewhere, the lives of the Ibiza people would be the same or better than under the reign of this buffoon." One disgruntled local posted: "Coming from abroad and being called the 'King of Ibiza' seems very offensive to me, or rather narcissistic."
Speaking to MailOnline, one taxi driver slammed his beach club, O Beach, for getting people who 'don't respect the island drunk before releasing them into the public'.
After getting attacked last week, Wayne took to his social media to explain what happened with a picture of him giving the camera a thumbs up. He said: "I wanted to write this post to let everyone know that I’m doing ok… I have a few stitches and a swollen lip. It could have been much worse so I count myself very fortunate I wasn’t standing 2 yards further back, as my head would have impacted the wall.
"Obviously the video is very disturbing to see especially for my family. The papers were very accurate and it was a simple case of me just trying to protect a girl from being harassed. Thank you everyone for all your messages of concern the support has been really overwhelming."
