France superstar Kylian Mbappe will need surgery after breaking his nose against Switzerland at Euro 2024.

However, Real Madrid's summer signing will not require an operation until after Les Bleus' time at the tournament in Germany is complete. Manager Didier Deschamps provided an update on Mbappe's situation, with the 25-year-old set to undergo tests on Wednesday.

After battling to win the ball from a set-piece, Mbappe saw his follow-through motion take him directly into the shoulder of Kevin Danso. The former PSG talisman left the field covered in blood in the closing stages of France's win over Austria, with his fitness in doubt.

Deschamps has revealed that surgery will be required for his star striker following the tournament, but his condition has already improved. Mbappe will be given a protective mask in order to make a swift return to the pitch.

Speaking to the press, France boss Deschamps said: "This Wednesday there will be more tests to see his evolution. It was a major shock. The medical staff did everything necessary to reduce it as much as possible, after the tests.

"Even if there is not surgery immediately, he will have to do it after the tournament. This morning he was already a little better, so we will see. We will follow it closely every day."

After initial concerns that his tournament could be in doubt, the French Football Federation were reassured after Mbappe's trip to the hospital. The forward will return to the tournament but his status for France's match against Netherlands was not confirmed.

The statement released by the FFF said: "Kylian Mbappe returns to the base camp of the French national team. Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second part of the Austria-France held this Monday in Dusseldorf.

"The captain of France was treated first by the medical staff and Dr. Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed him with a nose fracture. Mbappe will receive treatment in the next few days, but he will not undergo surgery in the immediate future.

"A mask will be made for him so that the number 10 of the French national team can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment."
