A driver was arrested hours after he was banned from getting behind the wheel of a car.

Can Koroglu of Copthall Green, Waltham Abbey, had appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 13 charged with driving offences. Koroglu, 34, was found guilty of driving with no insurance and immediately disqualified.

However, immediately after the hearing, Koroglu then got into his car and drove home. Officers were alerted and Roads Policing officers were deployed to the area. Koroglu was stopped just short of his home address by officers, less than an hour after he'd been disqualified.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the same court the following day, Friday 14 June, where he faced a charge of driving whilst disqualified. The court handed down a 10-week custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months and issued a new 18-month driving ban, three times longer than the original ban along with over £200 fines and costs.

Adam Pipe, Head of Essex Roads Policing, said: “Unfortunately, this is quite a regular occurrence. Despite the fact drivers facing a potential ban are clearly warned in advance that any ban takes immediate effect, many still attend the hearing having driven there.

“Some also take the chance of driving home. This case shows how Essex Police teams successfully work together to ensure road safety across the county.”

The driver received little sympathy from people on social media. One person said: “Now he’s just gonna get a ban for being banned for getting banned in the first place.”

Another added: “Driver doesn't care, punitive punishments are laughable! Put him in prison for a month might help!”

Another lamented: “I suspect he doesn’t care.”
