A Royal Ascot bookie was left reeling from a ‘painful’ financial blow when a punter landed a huge £100,000 wager on Wednesday.
Star Sports, which has betting pitches at Ascot, has forged a reputation for accepting six figure bets from high staking punters.
And it took its biggest of the week when a customer asked to bet £100,000 on the favourite for the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, last year’s Derby winner Auguste Rodin.
The Aidan O’Brien star delivered for his connections and the punter as he held off French pair Zarakem and Horizon Dore to win the £1 million prize.
As a result Star Sports had to payout a whopping sum of £262,500, which included the £100,000 stake, to the unnamed customer.
Meghan Markle 'to unleash her own memoirs' as Prince Harry's drops next weekFlynn Goward, managing director of Star Sports, said: “It’s by far the biggest bet we have taken so far this week. It’s good to see that those bets are still flying around on course.
“It was £100,000 at 13-8 which wins the best part of £160,000, a little bit more, but that’s why we’re here. We’re here to take these big bets. We like to be the layers of the bigger bets.
“It has put us on the back foot so far, but we’ve still got three more days to get it back.”
Auguste Rodin, winning his sixth Group 1 race, scored by three quarters of a length and a length under Ryan Moore.
But punters on the track were left straining their ears unable to hear the commentary clearly due to audio problems.
Racecaller Stewart Machin was doing his level best, but the sound was intermittent with only snatches of his words coming out over the speakers.
The hiccup follows problems on day one of the meeting when the WiFi went down across the track for over an hour.
Bookmakers and traders were only accepting cash while engineers fixed the internet.
Ascot immediately posted a notice on its screens which said: “We apologise for technical difficulties with the sound.”
Goward said: “It was like a static commentary coming over which is disappointing because the punters pay a lot to get in here and then you get a commentary like that.
Harry and Meghan convinced 'royals were against them' after New Year photo snub“I appreciate it’s an anomaly but I didn’t hear any of the race pretty much but managed to watch it on the big screen.
“Nevertheless to do the guts of £160,000 whether you were watching or listening to it is still painful.”
