Sir Jim Ratcliffe admits that Manchester United have been "hamstrung" in the transfer market after targeting a dramatic overhaul at Old Trafford.

The INEOS owner is currently in the middle of his first summer transfer window at Old Trafford. Ratcliffe, the club’s new minority owner, has already expressed his intent to invest in the playing squad.

He has since revealed that he wants to strengthen several positions across the side to re-establish the club at the top of the European game, but delayed backroom appointments are delaying things.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Ratcliffe said: “There's room for improvement everywhere we look at Manchester United, and we will improve everything. We want to be where Real Madrid is today, but it'll take time.

“I’m not confident that we’ll solve all the problems in the first transfer window. Manchester United doesn't have any players that are valued at €100 million or more,” Ratcliffe also reportedly suggested that buying one expensive star “isn’t going to solve the problem at Manchester United.”

While the Red Devils are targeting several players, Ratcliffe has been forced to admit that his backroom changes are causing frustration. Man United are still yet to get a deal over the line for Dan Ashworth - who remains on gardening leave.

Omar Berrada is also officially yet to start work. Speaking on his backroom appointments, Ratcliffe said: “We’re sort of a bit handicapped in that sense, so I think we’ll do a fairly good job. It will take two or three summer windows to get to a better place.”

Despite changes behind the scenes causing havoc to Man United’s work in the transfer market, that has not stopped them from tabling bids. The Red Devils have already lodged an opening offer for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite.

They offered £35m for his services but Everton are looking for closer to £70m. That has already caused an issue given that the club only have a £50m for the entirety of the summer transfer window.

That could lead to the club being creative with their future deals. Reports have suggested that the Red Devils are considering a swap deal involving Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi.

They have also been backed to offer Harry Maguire in part-exchange for Branthwaite. Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood could also all be sold to generate vital funds for signings.
