Just 26% of adults - aged up to 27 - are fans of mint choc chip, while 38% favour strawberry and a mere 13% opt for rum and raisin, according to a survey of 2,000 ice cream eaters.

However, the study found that younger generations are more adventurous when it comes to trying new and unusual flavours. Rhubarb (15%) and biscuit-inspired options like Jaffa Cakes (19%) are among the flavours they're most keen to sample. In contrast, Gen X's favourite remains the timeless plain vanilla, with 68% sticking to this classic choice.

The research was commissioned by QVC to coincide with the launch of the Ninja Creami Deluxe ice cream maker on its website. Kate James, from the online retailer, commented: "It's interesting to see that older adults are still sticking to the tried-and-tested flavours they grew up with but younger people are more willing to experiment."

"We also know ice cream making at home has been a growing trend with Google searches doubling since last year - let's see what flavours they can come up with."

Other flavours those born after 1996 would like to try include marshmallow (16%) and even popcorn (9%). Gen Z also admit they're most likely to try hip food trends like charcoal ice cream - more than any other age group.

And while only 4% of Gen X - born between 1965 and 1980 - describe themselves as 'very adventurous' with their food choices, 23% of Gen Z feel they are.

Across all age groups, 45% agree that 'anything' can - and seemingly will - be made into an ice cream flavour these days. However, a third (34%) admit they've become less adventurous with their food choices as they've aged. And nine in 10 confess they'll sometimes try something new - only to regret it and wish they'd stuck with an old favourite.

Moreover, more than half (52%) enjoy ice cream all year round, not just in summer, according to the OnePoll.com figures. Afternoons were the most popular time to indulge in the frozen treat (40%), while almost a third (29%) reckon any time of the day is appropriate.

On the sofa in front of the TV is the preferred place to eat it (40%) with the garden being the next most popular spot (24%) - with the majority using a dessert spoon.

The Ninja Creami Deluxe creates treats from frozen yoghurts and ice creams to frappes and slushies - and an 'ice cream bike' has been created to travel around London this Friday and Saturday, serving up the flavours Londoners are most keen to try.

QVC's Kate James added "Everyone loves a classic such as vanilla ice cream. Now they can make that at home as well as other flavours and iced drinks this summer. Although, as our research has shown half of us will be eating it all year round."
