Graham Potter will now go all-in on the England job after missing out on the Leicester vacancy.

The former Chelsea and Brighton tactician was one of the favourites to succeed Enzo Maresca in the East Midlands. Potter held talks with the Foxes, who were reportedly hopeful of appointing him, but discussions collapsed.

That has forced Leicester to turn to former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper. He has penned a three-year deal in the East Midlands.

It has also left Potter once again without an imminent role, but he is happy to bide his time. According to reports earlier this month, the 49-year-old has aspirations of taking the England job in the future.

Current Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate sees his contract expire at the end of the calendar year. He has even revealed that he could exit should England fail to win Euro 2024.

That has allowed Potter time to wait for the job should it become available. After leaving Chelsea in April 2023, he has been linked with a whole host of vacancies - not just at Leicester.

Manchester United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a noted admirer. He has sounded him out for two roles both at Old Trafford and with French side Nice.

As it stands, Francesco Farioli remains in charge with the latter ahead of a potential move to Dutch side Ajax. Ratcliffe has also underlined his faith in Ten Hag after conducting a detailed post-season review.

Away from Ratcliffe-owned clubs, Potter has also been targeted by a host of other sides. Former club Brighton were interested but have instead plumped for German boss Fabian Hürzeler.

That leaves the England job as the only one Potter could realistically be tempted by. But now it is down to The FA to make their move but only if Southgate decides to leave.

It is understood that FA chiefs do not have a plan to sack Southgate even if England flop at the Euros. He still has plenty of credit in the bank, having led the Three Lions to a World Cup semi-final and the final of the Euros in 2021.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham is still expecting a successful tournament in Germany either way and is keen to tie Southgate down to a new contract. The FA want Southgate to lead England to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
