A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that a third (33%) are uncomfortable having more than 10 people in their home and 57% find hosting stressful as they can't relax.

Other concerns include carpet stains (56%), breakages (52%), and noise complaints from neighbours (46%). The poll also found that 28% worry about their walls getting scratched, while 27% fret over guests not removing their shoes. Interestingly, 83% prefer to host a small group of select individuals, with six being the ideal number of guests.

This study was commissioned by SharkNinja to coincide with the launch of its new vacuum, the Shark CarpetXpert Deep Carpet Cleaner.

In response to the findings, the company has taken over a pub in London's Fitzrovia, renaming it The Carpeters Arms - the only pub encouraging patrons to spill drinks on its white carpet.

This comes after discovering that 34% of respondents feel anxious about guests spilling drinks on the carpet while watching TV, particularly when their football team scores. Some would rather watch a football match in a bar or pub to avoid dealing with the mess afterwards (48%).

To help alleviate the nation's 'spill-xiety' during the football season, the brand has partnered with football legend Harry Redknapp for an event offering solutions to these hosting woes.

Harry stated, "I know full well that guests can get rowdy when watching a football game, and pints have been known to go in the air! The Carpeters Arms tonight is offering football fans the night off and giving them a place to enjoy a drink, without the worry of spills."

Tracey Scully, UK Managing Director at SharkNinja, commented: "With our research showing that the nation is anxious about hosting at home due to messy guests, particularly around rowdy events such as football season, we wanted to do something to take the pressure off."

"That's why we've opened The Carpeters Arms today, an event to give people a place to enjoy the game without the worry. But also to show how you can take the stress out of hosting."

The study further revealed that broken glasses, muddy footprints on a clean carpet and overflowing bins are some of the most infuriating things faced after hosting a gathering.

On average, individuals spend 24 minutes preparing their home for guests, with 56% admitting to a panic clean beforehand. A whopping 82% ensure their home is at its absolute cleanest for when guests arrive. Cleaning tasks include vacuuming (76%), cleaning the bathroom (74%) and dusting everywhere (62%).

Interestingly, a third (33%) are less concerned about causing a mess in someone else's home, than their own. And according to OnePoll statistics, 15% have even attempted to hide a spillage they caused at a friend's house so they wouldn't be found out.
