The fire brigade said several supporters but "less than 20" were hurt.

The worrying scene was treated as a major incident and the match postponed.

Players rushed over to help and some fans held up a large metal frame to possibly prevent more injuries.

A few supporters who escaped being hit walked around looking dazed.

And red smoke set off before the game added to the confusion as it covered the terraces.

One fan could be seen putting his head in his hands in despair.

Others dashed around trying to see how they could help out.

Two "trauma helicopters" arrived on the pitch as Dutch outlet Oost reported how large the incident became.

The news website said emergency services were "present in large numbers" and "scaled up to Grip 1, which often happens during major incidents".

Oost added that "all injured people" were "conscious and approachable".

FC Twente said in a statement: "Prior to the practice match... an accident took place during an atmosphere action.

"When both teams emerged, the banner with the stand fell over supporters who were standing behind one of the goals.

"There were injuries in the process. Everyone is conscious and has received medical attention. A trauma helicopter was called in as a precaution."
